Bharat Forge Limited (BFL) has secured a ₹425 crore contract from the Ministry of Defence for the supply of advanced Gas Turbine Generators (GTGs) to the Indian Navy. The project marks a major milestone for the company as it expands its footprint into the marine gas turbine segment and strengthens India’s drive toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
The contract, awarded under the Buy (Indian) category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, involves the supply of next-generation onboard power generation systems for Kolkata-class naval warships. The programme is scheduled to be executed over a five-year period.
The new generators, rated at 1.25 MW, will replace lower-capacity units currently deployed on the vessels. Designed to enhance onboard power availability and operational efficiency, the systems will support the growing energy requirements of modern naval platforms equipped with increasingly sophisticated mission and combat systems.
The order represents a significant achievement for Bharat Forge and establishes the company as a participant in India’s marine gas turbine ecosystem. The programme will result in the deployment of the first indigenously produced gas turbine-based power generation system aboard Indian Navy ships, reinforcing the country’s efforts to build critical defence technologies within its own industrial base.
To support execution of the project, Bharat Forge will establish a dedicated integration and testing facility focused on gas turbine generator systems. The infrastructure will play a key role in validating performance, reliability, and operational readiness before deployment on naval platforms.
The company also plans to contribute to future design and development programmes involving higher-capacity marine power plants and propulsion gas turbines. These capabilities are expected to support long-term requirements of the Indian armed forces while creating a strong domestic foundation for manufacturing, maintenance, overhaul, and lifecycle support of gas turbine systems.
The initiative is aligned with the Government of India’s objective of strengthening indigenous defence capabilities and reducing dependence on imported technologies. Localized production and servicing of critical power generation equipment will improve operational readiness while ensuring greater control over strategic assets.
