BASF Stationary Energy Storage GmbH, a subsidiary of BASF, and NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (NGK), a leading Japanese ceramics manufacturer, have announced the launch of the NAS MODEL L24, an advanced container-type sodium-sulfur (NAS) battery.

This new product, developed collaboratively by BASF and NGK, boasts a significantly lower degradation rate of less than 1% per year, achieved through reduced corrosion in battery cells. Additionally, the NAS MODEL L24 features an improved thermal management system that enables longer continuous discharge.

“These advancements allow for fewer NAS battery containers over the project’s lifetime, resulting in lower maintenance costs,” stated Frank Prechtl, Managing Director of BASF Stationary Energy Storage GmbH. “Our customers can expect a 20% reduction in initial investment and long-term project costs with the NAS MODEL L24. This product represents a significant milestone in our commitment to advancing NAS battery technology and supporting the energy transition.”

Ryugo Takeda, Vice President and General Manager of NGK’s Energy Storage Division, added, “This enhanced performance is a result of our intensive collaboration with BASF, which began in 2019. The low degradation rate of less than 1% per year is a notable achievement for the energy storage sector. We are excited to provide solutions to more customers through BASF’s global network, promoting renewable energy adoption and CO2 emission reductions.”

The NAS MODEL L24 meets the latest safety standards for energy storage installations, such as UL1973 and UL9540A, ensuring a high degree of safety. NAS batteries are known for their long life, high energy density, and capability to provide stable power for over six hours. They have been installed at over 250 locations worldwide, with a total capacity of approximately 5,000 megawatt-hours.

These batteries are crucial for stabilizing renewable energy, optimizing its utilization through peak shaving and load balancing, and providing emergency power supply. The NAS MODEL L24 will be available for delivery in the second half of 2024, following the completion of conformance with domestic regulations for the Japanese market.
