NGK Receives Order for NAS Batteries to Boost Renewable Energy Integration and Grid Stability

NAS batteries with 69.6 MWh capacity will stabilize grid by storing excess power for 6,000 households daily.

NGK, the renowned insulator manufacturer, has announced that it has received a substantial order from SALA ENERGY, a subsidiary of SALA Corporation focused on the energy sector. The order is for the supply of NAS® batteries, which will be utilized for electrical power storage at the SALA Hamamatsu Storage Station located in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture.

The NAS batteries, with a remarkable capacity of 69,600 kWh (69.6 MWh), are designed to store electrical power equivalent to the consumption of approximately 6,000 average households for an entire day. This energy storage facility aims to stabilize the supply and demand of electrical power by storing surplus electricity during times of excess supply and discharging it when there are shortages in the grid.

The implementation of NAS batteries is a crucial step towards achieving grid stability in the face of increasing renewable energy integration. With the growing adoption of solar and wind power, the variability in power generation due to weather conditions has become a challenge. NAS batteries provide an effective solution to this issue by allowing for efficient grid management, enabling better matching of supply and demand, and ensuring a stable supply of electricity.

SALA ENERGY plans to utilize the stored energy in the NAS batteries for various applications, including trading in electricity markets such as supply and demand adjustment markets and capacity markets. Additionally, they aim to reduce the cost of procuring electrical power through arbitrage in the wholesale electrical power market. This strategic approach is expected to optimize energy utilization and further promote the use of renewable energy sources.

The NAS batteries have already earned recognition globally for their reliability and performance. With a track record of over 20 years and installations at more than 250 locations worldwide, these megawatt-class storage batteries have proven their capabilities in stabilization of renewable energy sources, load balancing, and serving as emergency power sources.

The project has been selected as part of the “Project to Support the Introduction of Storage Battery Systems and Water Electrolysis Equipment for Power Grids (Revised Budget FY2022)” led by the Sustainable Open Innovation Initiative. This initiative, entrusted by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, aims to support businesses contributing to grid . stability and enhanced integration of renewable energy. NGK remains committed to meeting the demand for large-capacity storage batteries, facilitating the proliferation of renewable energy, and playing a significant role in realizing a carbon-neutral society. Construction for the energy storage facility is scheduled to commence in July 2023, with operations expected to begin in the spring of 2026.
