Ambuja Cements, the cement and building materials company of the Adani Group, has entered into a strategic partnership with Leilac Limited, a UK-based clean technology company, to develop and demonstrate commercial-scale low-carbon cement production. The collaboration represents a significant milestone in Ambuja Cements’ sustainability roadmap and reinforces its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The partnership will focus on deploying advanced carbon capture and electrification technologies at Ambuja Cements’ Sanghi plant in Sanghipuram, Kutch, Gujarat. With an installed capacity of 6.6 million tonnes per annum, the facility will serve as the site for a large-scale demonstration project aimed at reducing emissions associated with cement manufacturing while increasing the use of renewable energy.

The project will evaluate the integration of Leilac’s carbon capture technology alongside hybrid electric heating systems designed for energy-intensive industrial processes. By combining renewable electricity with innovative emissions-reduction technologies, the initiative seeks to address process-related carbon dioxide emissions that are traditionally difficult to eliminate in cement production.

A key objective of the collaboration is to create a viable pathway toward significantly lowering the sector’s carbon footprint while improving the commercial feasibility of carbon capture technologies. The solution is designed to enable flexible use of alternative fuels and potentially eliminate reliance on coal, supporting a transition toward cleaner and more sustainable manufacturing operations.

If successfully demonstrated, the project has the potential to be expanded seven to eight times its initial scale, enabling the capture of more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Such an expansion would position the facility among the largest industrial carbon capture projects globally and establish a replicable model for low-carbon cement production in India and international markets.

Karan Adani, Director of Ambuja Cements, said the cement industry’s transition to a lower-carbon future requires innovation, collaboration and the adoption of transformative technologies. He noted that the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to evaluating advanced solutions that can reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency and support sustainable growth.

Daniel Rennie, Chief Executive Officer of Leilac Limited, said Ambuja Cements’ extensive manufacturing network provides an ideal platform to demonstrate scalable low-carbon cement production. He added that the collaboration aims to develop a commercially viable solution that can support the decarbonisation of the global cement industry.

Ambuja Cements Limited, a part of the diversified Adani Group, is the world’s ninth-largest building materials solutions company and one of India’s leading cement manufacturers. With a production capacity of 109 MTPA across 24 integrated manufacturing plants and 22 grinding units, the company is playing a pivotal role in building a greener, stronger India.

Committed to sustainable growth, Ambuja Cements is accelerating its decarbonisation journey through investments in 1 GW of renewable energy (solar and wind) and 376 MW of Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS) by FY2028. The company has also forged strategic partnerships with Leilac to develop commercial-scale low-carbon cement and with Coolbrook to deploy the zero-carbon RotoDynamic Heater™ (RDH™) technology.

Ambuja Cements has achieved 12x water positivity and 7x plastic negativity, reflecting its strong environmental stewardship. It is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and is among the four global large-scale building materials companies whose near-term and net-zero targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The company’s innovative products are listed in the GRIHA product catalogue, and its captive port network of ten terminals enables cleaner and more cost-effective bulk cement transportation. Recognized among India’s Most Trusted Cement Brands by TRA Research, Ambuja Cements has earned a Leadership Score of ‘A’ from CDP and is the world’s first cement manufacturer to join the Alliance for Industrial Decarbonization (AFID), a global initiative facilitated by IRENA.
