Alstom today announced the start of commercial operations on the remaining sections of the Delhi–Ghaziabad–Meerut Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor, along with the launch of the Meerut Metro. Both projects are powered by Alstom’s India-built trainsets and cutting-edge ETCS Hybrid Level 3 signalling deployed over LTE 4G.

The newly opened stretches include the 5.5-km section between New Ashok Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan, the 21-km section from Meerut South to Modipuram, and the full 21-km Meerut Metro route. Delivered in partnership with the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), the project marks a major advancement in regional and intra-city mobility, improving connectivity across the National Capital Region while offering Meerut residents a modern urban transit system.

The Meerut Metro is the first metro network in India to use ETCS Hybrid Level 3 signalling over LTE 4G, introducing higher levels of safety, efficiency, and operational flexibility. Speaking on the occasion, Olivier Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India, said the launch of full RRTS operations and the Meerut Metro would strengthen regional growth and mobility, adding that Alstom remains committed to supporting NCRTC in delivering advanced rail solutions.

Designed at Alstom’s Hyderabad engineering centre and manufactured at Savli, Gujarat, the trains are fully built in India, supporting national manufacturing goals. Key propulsion and electrical components were produced at Alstom’s Maneja facility.

The Meerut Metro trainsets, based on Alstom’s Adessia commuter platform, are built with passenger comfort and sustainability in mind. Features include overhead luggage racks, onboard information displays, USB charging points, spaces for wheelchair users, stretcher accommodation for medical emergencies, and integrated communication systems that meet global safety standards. The 21-km line connects Meerut South to Modipuram through 12 stations, with four stations providing seamless interchange with the Namo Bharat corridor.

Under a 2020 contract, Alstom supplied 180 RRTS train cars and 30 MRTS cars, delivered signalling, train control, telecommunications, platform screen doors, LTE communication systems, and will provide maintenance support for 15 years. The RRTS network aims to ease traffic congestion across the capital region by enabling faster travel between satellite towns while complementing the expanding metro network. With this milestone, Alstom and NCRTC have taken another step toward reshaping rail-based mobility in India.
