Alstom, a global provider of smart and sustainable mobility solutions, has delivered the first two of eight new trains designated for the expansion of Santo Domingo Metro Line 2. The delivery marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to enhance urban transportation infrastructure in the Dominican Republic’s capital.
The project involves the design, manufacturing, and delivery of eight three-car Metropolis trains, which will support the metro system’s extension to Los Alcarrizos. Built at Alstom’s production facility in Santa Perpétua, Barcelona, the trains form part of a broader initiative to modernize and expand Santo Domingo’s public transit network.
The newly delivered trains were transported from Spain as individual cars and assembled upon arrival in the Dominican Republic. Following assembly, they are undergoing final inspections before integration into the metro system. Pre-operational testing is now underway, during which key systems will be validated under real-world conditions. This phase includes the introduction of a new generation braking system, complementing earlier factory testing.
The trains incorporate a range of features designed to improve both passenger experience and operational efficiency. These include wider doors to facilitate smoother boarding and alighting, open gangways that allow full circulation between cars, modern passenger information systems, and energy-efficient LED lighting. Driver cabins are equipped with advanced technology to support safe and reliable operations.
Additionally, the trains are capable of operating in multiple-unit configurations, enabling increased capacity as demand grows. Efforts are also ongoing to ensure compatibility between different train series, with the aim of optimizing overall system performance.
The Line 2C extension, connecting María Montez station with Los Alcarrizos, is expected to significantly improve mobility for more than 14 communities. By reducing travel times and easing congestion on major roadways, the project is positioned to deliver tangible benefits to daily commuters.
Alstom has played a longstanding role in the development of the Santo Domingo Metro and continues to support its evolution as a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation system. The remaining trains are currently in production, with further deliveries scheduled over the coming months.
