Alkem Laboratories Ltd (BSE: 539523, NSE: ALKEM) has announced the launch of NeuCeno (cenobamate), an anti-seizure medication for the treatment of partial-onset seizures in adult patients. Cenobamate is being launched for the first time in India and is available as a once-daily oral therapy in 12.5 mg, 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, 150 mg and 200 mg tablets.

Epilepsy remains a significant healthcare burden in India, with an estimated 9.4 million people living with the condition. Despite the availability of several anti-seizure medications, a significant proportion of patients continue to experience uncontrolled seizures, which can affect independence, daily activities and quality of life.

Cenobamate works through a dual mechanism of action. It selectively inhibits the persistent sodium current associated with repetitive neuronal firing while also enhancing the brain’s natural inhibitory signalling through positive modulation of GABA-A receptors.

According to randomized clinical studies involving adults with uncontrolled focal seizures receiving existing anti-seizure medications, adjunctive treatment with cenobamate resulted in reductions in seizure frequency of up to 78%. During the maintenance phase of the studies, up to 30% of patients achieved seizure freedom.

The launch of NeuCeno expands the treatment options available to adult patients with partial-onset seizures in India. Alkem said the introduction is intended to improve access to an additional therapeutic option while supporting healthcare professionals in the management of patients with epilepsy.

Commenting on the launch, Sandeep Singh, Managing Director, Alkem Laboratories Limited, said, “People living with epilepsy and their caregivers face significant challenges in achieving effective seizure control. Cenobamate has the potential to transform treatment outcomes towards delivering better epilepsy management. At Alkem, we believe patients deserve access to advanced treatment options that can help address unmet medical needs. With the launch of NeuCeno (cenobamate), we reaffirm our commitment to improving patient care by enabling access to an important therapeutic option and supporting healthcare professionals in making informed treatment decisions for adults living with partial-onset seizures.”

NeuCeno is part of Alkem’s continued focus on expanding access to high-quality medicines across key therapeutic areas. The company said it remains committed to supporting better patient care in India through the introduction of advanced treatment options.
