Aequs Group and the Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad (IIT-D) have jointly established an advanced research and development ecosystem focused on materials science and manufacturing innovation at the IIT Dharwad campus. The initiative is aimed at strengthening collaboration between industry and academia while accelerating applied research in advanced manufacturing technologies.
The newly operational facility has been designed to support advanced material characterization, failure analysis, manufacturing process simulation, and optimization. The center will enable researchers, engineers, and industry professionals to conduct detailed studies on material behavior and manufacturing performance in precision-driven industrial applications.
The collaboration marks the beginning of a broader initiative to establish a dedicated “IIT Dharwad – Aequs Research and Development Center” in the near future. The proposed center is expected to promote innovation-led manufacturing, encourage deeper industry participation in academic research, and help bridge the gap between laboratory research and industrial implementation.
Aequs, a globally recognized precision manufacturing company with operations across aerospace and consumer sectors, said the partnership reflects its long-term commitment to strengthening India’s advanced manufacturing capabilities through sustained investment in research, innovation, and workforce development.
Commenting on the initiative, Aravind Melligeri, Executive Chairman and CEO of Aequs Ltd., said the partnership will significantly enhance IIT Dharwad’s applied research capabilities and increase industry engagement opportunities for students and researchers. He noted that the collaboration would also support Aequs in developing advanced manufacturing solutions and delivering technologically sophisticated products to its global customers. According to Melligeri, innovation and scientific research are becoming increasingly critical in high-precision industries where product reliability, quality control, and manufacturing efficiency directly influence competitiveness.
Professor Venkappayya R Desai, Director of IIT Dharwad, described the launch of the advanced materials research facility as an important step toward strengthening industry-aligned research at the institute. He stated that the collaboration provides students and researchers with direct exposure to real-world manufacturing challenges while enabling meaningful contributions to industrial innovation. Desai added that the initiative could serve as a model for deeper integration between academia and industry in emerging areas such as materials science, manufacturing engineering, and industrial automation.
The center is expected to play a key role in improving understanding of material properties, structural behavior, and failure mechanisms. Such insights are critical for sectors that rely on high-performance materials and precision manufacturing processes, including aerospace, automotive, defense, electronics, and industrial engineering.
By supporting advanced testing and analytical capabilities, the facility aims to contribute to improved product quality, greater reliability, reduced component failure rates, and more efficient production methods. The initiative also supports India’s broader ambitions to strengthen domestic manufacturing and build globally competitive industrial capabilities.
Beyond research activities, the facility is actively conducting practical training programs for engineers, students, and researchers. These programs focus on advanced analysis techniques for both metallic and non-metallic materials, helping participants develop specialized skills relevant to modern manufacturing industries.
Aequs continues to support the facility through technical evaluations, performance monitoring, and maintenance oversight to ensure high operational standards and scientific accuracy. The company’s involvement is expected to help align academic research with industrial requirements and emerging market needs.
Aequs operates as a vertically integrated precision manufacturing company with expertise in producing complex components for global original equipment manufacturers. The company has built engineering-led manufacturing ecosystems designed to improve efficiency, reliability, and scalability across multiple sectors. IIT Dharwad, meanwhile, has emerged as one of India’s leading institutions for engineering education and research. The institute continues to focus on advancing innovation, scientific discovery, and collaborative research initiatives across critical technology domains.
