Measure and Monitor your Good

It is said that whatever you measure, can be monitored and whatever you monitor, can be improved. We measure the money we earn, the materialistic pleasures we savour, even the love we get. But, often, we forget to measure the ‘Good’ that we do…is that probably because this is something we deliver it ‘away’?

In today’s dynamic and difficult world, it is very important to ‘Do Good’ and measure it. This is called ‘Kindness Quotient’. Its beauty is that it rises exponentially by delivering it, unlike any other Quotient. But still, it is not very popular amongst the masses, since it is about parting with or ‘giving away’.

We all need to take our initiative and leadership to make it viral, so that many understand its power and get benefitted by its might. We need to do good and facilitate others also do good to others, to the surrounding community without worrying about what we get in return. It is a very sensitive and delicate matter, that needs to be nurtured into our minds effectively. If this is explained well, in simple words, it can be understood. We have a lot of people in our surrounding who are an excellent example of ‘doing good’ – you could observe that many of them have been doing this since many years. We all could emulate a portion of it, and serve our community without losing anything.

Selfless service needs to be our motto. The happiness and contentment we get after doing this service is beyond compare. One needs to go through this experience of ‘doing good’ to be able to nourish this happiness. The entire outlook towards life transforms once we harness this habit, and our life goes through a wonderful paradigm shift, that enables us to witness satisfaction and happiness. This inturn imparts self-motivation and encouragement to remain in the state of happiness and continue doing good. It is a cycle and a rhythm which then continues to repeat itself, thereby taking us away from sorrow or dejection.

The easiest thing is to develop a routine to measure the amount of good we do to others, very similar to the way we track our money and other materialistic pleasures, we will be able to ensure that we monitor its growth. This is important to our life. The simplest way of measuring could be the number of lives of strangers we touch each day, or the number of known people in our own organisation or community, whom we help in person. The best is to have a pre-defined target in mind, and work towards surpassing it. In fact, now there exists a ‘good country index’ (www.goodcountry.org) that measures what each country contributes to the common good of humanity and to the planet, without harming the interests of people in other countries. Finland, Netherlands and Ireland are the top three countries on this index.

Doing this will also enable us bring innovation into the act of doing good, and will in turn bring happiness to somebody other than our immediate family or self. We would learn by this way, to broaden our horizon. We would be motivated to share the act of goodness with others, and discuss the possibility of extending it through our known acquaintances to a larger community, thereby involving many of the strangers into this act. Benevolence is contagious. We will see the spread of this act faster and wider, and this would also end up giving satisfaction and joy to us. This is the secret of “doing good” which I call a reflection of ‘Kindness Quotient’. So, ask yourselves every day, Did you MMYG today?
