 HBIS Tangsteel has successfully commissioned a new slab continuous caster at its Laoting plant in Hebei Province, supplied by Primetals Technologies. This marks the fourth caster delivered by Primetals at the facility, strengthening a long-standing collaboration between the two companies.
The Laoting plant now operates a total of eight slab caster strands, all provided by Primetals Technologies, with a combined annual production capacity of 9.6 million tonnes. The earlier installations were completed in 2020 and 2023, forming part of the site’s phased expansion.
With this latest addition, the partnership between HBIS Group and Primetals Technologies has extended to ten continuous casting projects, covering both slab and long-product casters as well as modernization initiatives. The continued engagement reflects confidence in the supplier’s technology and service capabilities.
The scope of the latest project included mechanical equipment, advanced automation systems and implementation support. The new caster integrates several technologies aimed at improving product quality and operational efficiency.
Among these is the DynaFlex hydraulic oscillator, which allows precise adjustment of mold oscillation parameters, enhancing slab surface quality. The system also supports higher casting speeds while reducing operational risks. The DynaWidth system enables rapid mold-width changes, allowing greater flexibility in production.
Automation plays a central role in optimizing performance. The Dynacs 3D secondary cooling model predicts temperature profiles along the strand, enabling accurate control of cooling processes. The DynaGap SoftReduction 3D system provides automated roll-gap control to improve internal quality by reducing segregation. Additional tools such as Yield Expert and Mold Expert further enhance productivity and operational safety by optimizing cutting processes and monitoring casting conditions in real time.
The commissioning of the new caster is expected to further improve production efficiency and product quality at the Laoting facility. HBIS Group established the Tangsteel New District in Laoting in 2017 as part of its strategy to relocate and upgrade production capacity from the city of Tangshan.
