Ather Energy Limited and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to use road condition data generated through Ather’s Pothole+ Alerts technology to support road safety and infrastructure maintenance in Pune. Under the agreement, Ather will share agreed data on road impediments, including potholes, damaged road patches and uneven stretches, with PMC. The information will help the civic body identify locations requiring attention, prioritise repair work and plan interventions. The data will also allow PMC to track recurring road problems and identify areas that may need further inspection or maintenance.
Pothole+ Alerts uses information collected through Ather’s connected electric scooters as they travel on regular routes. The technology aggregates road-related inputs from the company’s connected fleet to identify impediments and alert riders to potentially rough road stretches. These insights can also provide civic authorities with an additional source of information when assessing road conditions and planning maintenance activities.
The collaboration will combine Ather’s connected vehicle data with PMC’s road maintenance and infrastructure responsibilities. The information shared by Ather will serve as an additional input alongside the corporation’s existing inspections and on-ground assessments. This is expected to help the civic body identify problem areas, direct repair work towards priority locations and monitor road defects that continue to occur.
Ravneet S Phokela, Chief Business Officer, Ather Energy Limited, said connected vehicle technology could provide useful information for urban infrastructure planning. He said Ather’s fleet generates insights into road conditions across everyday routes and that sharing this information with PMC would support the identification of road impediments and repair planning. He added that the initiative would extend the use of connected technology beyond the riding experience to support safer roads and infrastructure management.
Naval Kishore Ram, IAS, Municipal Commissioner, Pune, said timely identification of road defects was important for maintenance and commuter safety. He said the information received through the partnership would provide an additional input for identifying stretches requiring attention, prioritising repairs and tracking recurring road problems. He added that technology-based information could complement the corporation’s existing processes.
The MoU establishes a one-year framework for the collaboration. During this period, the two organisations will focus on sharing agreed road impediment data to support maintenance planning and infrastructure-related decisions in Pune. Powered by AtherStack 7, Pothole+ Alerts provides riders with advance warnings about rough road stretches through its navigation system and suggests smoother routes. The technology is designed to help riders anticipate road conditions before and during their journeys. Through the partnership with PMC, the information generated by the system will also be used to support civic road maintenance planning.
