BMW Industries Limited (BMWIL) has commissioned the Colour Coating line at its Greenfield Downstream Steel Complex in Bokaro, Jharkhand, marking the completion of the first phase of the project. The commissioning is part of the company’s plan to expand its presence in value-added downstream steel products.
The Bokaro complex is being developed at a total project cost of ₹803 crore and will include capacities for Cold Rolled Full Hard (CRFH), Galvanized/Galvalume/ZAM and Colour Coated steel products. The project is expected to allow BMWIL to expand its product portfolio and serve a wider customer base.
As of June 30, 2026, BMWIL had deployed ₹341.6 crore towards the project, comprising ₹139.2 crore from internal accruals and ₹202.4 crore through debt drawdown. Approximately ₹60 crore has been capitalised towards the Colour Coating line as of October 5, 2026. The company has tied up ₹500 crore of debt from a consortium led by SBI, HDFC Bank and Yes Bank.
“The commissioning of our Colour Coating line at Bokaro marks an important first step in our Greenfield expansion and in BMWIL’s evolution from a conversion-led business to an integrated, value-added downstream steel player,” said Ram Gopal Bansal, Chairman, BMW Industries Limited.
The company said the Bokaro complex will enable it to offer Galvanized, Galvalume, ZAM and Colour Coated products. Subsequent phases of the project will include 550,000 tonnes per annum of Cold Rolled Full Hard capacity and 540,000 tonnes per annum of GA/GI/ZAM capacity.
BMWIL has qualified under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) 1.1 scheme for the Coated/Plated Steel category, with performance-linked incentives applicable to sales up to FY29. The project is also eligible for benefits under the Jharkhand Industrial & Investment Promotion Policy. The company has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation Limited for PNG supply to the Bokaro facility as part of its energy requirements.
Revenue contribution from the project is expected to begin in the third quarter of FY27, followed by a phased ramp-up over subsequent quarters. The company expects the broader product portfolio to reduce dependence on a concentrated customer base and increase exposure to multiple end-use industries.
Bokaro provides access to steel-producing clusters, raw material sources and logistics networks. BMWIL said the project is aligned with the growing demand for specialised coated steel in India, supported by safeguard duties, Quality Control Orders and import substitution.
BMW Industries Limited, incorporated in 1981, manufactures and processes HRPO coils, CR coils, GP coils, GC sheets, MS and GI pipes and TMT rebars. The company has manufacturing facilities in West Bengal and Jharkhand and a joint venture with SAIL at Bokaro.
