Dürr has expanded its dispensing technology portfolio with the launch of the EcoMeter XS, a compact microdispensing system designed to automatically apply very small quantities of adhesives, sealants and other high-viscosity materials. The new system is primarily aimed at manufacturers of batteries, electronic components and electric motors. Its applications include vehicle battery assembly, power electronics production, magnet bonding in electric motors, grease and seal applications, and small-volume potting processes.
Dürr has previously used its EcoShot Meter dispensing technology for these applications. However, conventional systems can reach their limits when extremely small quantities of material need to be applied accurately. One such application is spot dispensing for round battery cells, where the material forms a thermal bridge between the cell and its cooling unit.
“One tenth of a cubic centimeter, applied to the front surface of the cell, is enough to establish thermal contact,” said Sebastian Jochum, Product Manager for dispensing technology at Dürr. “With the EcoMeter XS, Dürr now offers the perfect solution for these specific requirements in the manufacture of battery systems.”
The EcoMeter XS uses continuous material metering and application, eliminating the refilling interruptions associated with conventional piston dosing systems. The technology is based on Dürr’s established continuous-dosing technology used for larger-volume applications such as vehicle window bonding and has been adapted for microdispensing.
The system supports flow rates ranging from 0.00005 cm³/s to 1 cm³/s and enables precise control of the dosing rate when materials are supplied from cartridges or hobbocks. “With the EcoMeter XS, we are scaling our dispensing technology to the micro range. This allows us to offer the right dispensing solution for virtually any application volume,” Mr Jochum said.
The compact unit weighs between 0.8 and 1.6 kg, depending on its configuration. Its low weight enables installation on conventional robotic systems, axis gantries and robots with low payload capacities. This makes the EcoMeter XS suitable for compact production cells used in battery and electronics manufacturing, electric servo motor production and sealing applications.
A centralised dosing and process control system combines the main functions of the unit, simplifying operation and process management. Dürr has developed the EcoMeter XS with a modular design to address different microdispensing requirements. Multiple configurations and variants allow manufacturers to adapt the system to different material quantities, viscosities and component geometries as production requirements change.
The EcoMeter XS complements Dürr’s existing dispensing portfolio, which includes the EcoShot Meter and EcoMeter SP piston dosing systems. Together, the systems provide automated dispensing solutions for 1K and 2K adhesives and sealants, covering applications ranging from extremely small quantities to continuous high-volume dispensing.
