Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence has announced the launch of its next-generation OPTIV S optical coordinate measuring machine (CMM), beginning with the 4.4.3 configuration. The redesigned platform combines improved speed, accuracy and usability with a new generation of AI-assisted measurement technologies that will be introduced progressively through 2026 and 2027.

Designed for manufacturers inspecting complex and high-value components, OPTIV S brings together advanced vision measurement with tactile and multisensor capabilities. The system is aimed at industries including electronics, medical devices, automotive and precision engineering, helping quality teams increase inspection throughput while simplifying measurement and programming processes.

The new platform delivers improved measurement performance through a redesigned architecture. Tactile accuracy has been enhanced to E0, MPEE = (1.6 + L/200) μm, while machine dynamics have increased by approximately 30% through higher travel speeds and acceleration. Initial application testing has also demonstrated inspection cycle time reductions of approximately 15%. A larger field-of-view vision sensor allows more features to be captured in fewer images, further supporting faster inspection.

“Manufacturers are under increasing pressure to inspect more parts in less time without compromising accuracy,” said Manuel Mueller, Director, Product Marketing (HW & SW), Division Stationary Metrology, Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence. “OPTIV S was developed to help quality teams meet those demands by combining higher-speed measurement, improved precision and intelligent software capabilities that reduce programming effort and make advanced optical metrology easier to deploy.”

OPTIV S also introduces new intelligent measurement capabilities within PC-DMIS. AI Edge Detection, scheduled for commercial release with PC-DMIS 2026.2, uses AI-assisted camera and lighting calibration to improve edge detection, reduce programming time and deliver more consistent results under varying part conditions. Fast Auto-Focus, planned for 2027, is designed to provide up to 50% faster autofocus performance, while AI Illumination will automatically optimise lighting parameters to improve edge detection and reduce manual setup.

The new AI-assisted capabilities are also planned for Hexagon’s existing OPTIV M platform, enabling current users to access comparable improvements through software and system upgrades. OPTIV S complements Hexagon’s MAESTRO digital CMM platform as part of the company’s wider focus on intelligent and increasingly automated quality control. OPTIV S, starting with the 4.4.3 size, will be commercially available from September 14, 2026, at IMTS and AMB. Additional sizes, configurations and AI-powered capabilities will be introduced through 2027.
