BorgWarner has secured a new contract to supply its advanced torque-on-demand transfer case with mechanical lock (Mlock TOD) for a newly developed full-size SUV from a leading Chinese automotive manufacturer. Production of the drivetrain technology is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, strengthening BorgWarner’s presence in the growing all-wheel-drive vehicle segment in China.

The new business marks another milestone in BorgWarner’s long-standing relationship with the customer, reinforcing the company’s position as a trusted supplier of advanced four-wheel-drive technologies. The Mlock TOD system is designed to provide improved driving performance across a wide range of road and terrain conditions while enhancing vehicle capability, safety and efficiency.

The transfer case combines intelligent torque-on-demand technology with mechanical lock functionality, enabling the vehicle to automatically distribute power between the front and rear wheels when additional traction is required. The system also offers mechanical lock modes that improve performance in demanding off-road environments, giving drivers greater confidence on challenging terrain while maintaining smooth and efficient performance on regular roads.

The new SUV programme reflects the increasing demand for full-size sport utility vehicles that can deliver both everyday driving comfort and reliable off-road capability. Consumers are increasingly seeking vehicles that offer versatility without compromising fuel efficiency, handling or driving convenience. BorgWarner’s transfer case has been developed to address these evolving market requirements by providing a balanced solution for a variety of driving conditions.

Unlike conventional part-time four-wheel-drive systems that require drivers to manually select different drive modes, BorgWarner’s Mlock TOD system automatically manages torque distribution based on road conditions. This intelligent operation reduces driver intervention, improves vehicle stability and ensures better traction during changing weather and road situations. The technology also contributes to enhanced handling, improved safety and a more comfortable driving experience.

Commenting on the new business, Henk Vanthournout, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc and President and General Manager, Drivetrain and Morse Systems, said, “We have built a strong relationship with this customer over the past two decades, and we are pleased to continue supporting its latest SUV programme with our advanced all-wheel-drive technology. Our Mlock torque-on-demand system combines intelligent power distribution with mechanical locking capability, helping vehicles perform confidently across diverse driving environments. BorgWarner remains committed to delivering innovative drivetrain technologies that improve vehicle performance, efficiency and reliability.”

The Mlock TOD is based on BorgWarner’s proven transfer case platform and has been engineered to support a wide range of vehicle applications. Its flexible design enables automakers to integrate advanced four-wheel-drive capability while meeting evolving customer expectations for performance, comfort and operational efficiency.

Backed by decades of expertise in drivetrain technologies, BorgWarner continues to invest in engineering innovation, local manufacturing capabilities and customer-focused product development. The company works closely with global vehicle manufacturers to develop solutions that improve mobility while supporting changing market demands.

The latest contract further strengthens BorgWarner’s leadership in four-wheel-drive systems and highlights its ability to deliver advanced drivetrain solutions for next-generation SUVs. As demand for intelligent all-wheel-drive vehicles continues to grow, the company remains focused on providing reliable technologies that enhance driving performance, improve safety and create long-term value for automotive manufacturers worldwide.
