Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd has achieved a significant manufacturing milestone with the rollout of the three-millionth vehicle from its Chakan manufacturing facility. The landmark vehicle is the BE 6, the company’s flagship electric SUV, highlighting the plant’s growing role in supporting both conventional and electric vehicle production.
Since commencing operations in December 2009, the Chakan facility has grown into one of Mahindra’s most advanced and strategically important manufacturing hubs. The plant reached its latest production milestone at a much faster pace, manufacturing its most recent one million vehicles in just 27 months, compared to 107 months for the first million. The achievement reflects the company’s expanding production capacity and rising customer demand across domestic and international markets.
R Velusamy, President – Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said the rollout of the three-millionth vehicle marks an important chapter in Mahindra’s manufacturing journey. He said the significant reduction in production time for each successive million vehicles reflects the confidence of customers and the commitment of employees, suppliers and business partners. He added that the Chakan facility combines advanced manufacturing technologies with lean production systems to deliver quality, flexibility and efficiency while supporting the company’s long-term growth plans.
Spread across 657 acres, the Chakan manufacturing complex produces 19 vehicle models and more than 450 variants, including passenger vehicles, electric SUVs and commercial vehicles. The integrated facility has been designed to support flexible manufacturing, enabling multiple vehicle platforms to be produced on common assembly lines while responding quickly to changing market demand.
The plant has adopted a wide range of advanced manufacturing technologies, including Industry 4.0 systems, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), 5G connectivity and digital traceability across production processes. Around 1,500 robots are deployed across the facility, with more than 98 per cent automation in the body shop. Robotic painting systems, automated material movement, real-time quality monitoring and AI-enabled safety systems further strengthen operational efficiency and product quality.
Sustainability remains a key focus at the Chakan facility. More than half of its energy requirements are met through renewable energy sources, while electric vehicle manufacturing operations run entirely on renewable power. The facility is water positive, returning more water to nature than it consumes through extensive rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge initiatives. It is also certified as a Zero Waste to Landfill facility and continues to improve energy productivity in line with global sustainability commitments.
The Chakan plant also supports Mahindra’s international business, with vehicles manufactured at the facility exported to markets including South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The latest production milestone reinforces Mahindra’s commitment to strengthening India’s manufacturing capabilities while delivering world-class vehicles for customers across global markets.
