JSW Steel Limited has reported consolidated crude steel production of 21.18 lakh tonnes for April 2026, reflecting stable operational performance despite the temporary shutdown of a major blast furnace at its Vijayanagar facility for capacity enhancement work. The company stated that Blast Furnace 3 (BF3) at its Vijayanagar plant in Karnataka is currently undergoing an upgrade aimed at increasing production capacity.
The planned shutdown affected overall crude steel output during the month at the Indian operations level. However, excluding the impact of BF3 from the corresponding base period last year, the company recorded production growth of nearly 10 percent. JSW Steel attributed the increase primarily to the full ramp-up of operations at JSW Vijayanagar Metallics Limited (JVML), which has contributed to improved production momentum across domestic facilities.
According to the company, capacity utilisation at Indian operations stood at approximately 94 percent during April 2026 after excluding BF3 capacity. Including the temporarily unavailable BF3 capacity, overall utilisation was reported at 83 percent. The latest operational update reflects JSW Steel’s continued focus on capacity expansion, operational efficiency and long-term growth as the company advances multiple strategic projects across its manufacturing network.
Part of the diversified US$23 billion JSW Group, JSW Steel has evolved over the last three decades into India’s leading integrated steel manufacturer with a consolidated crude steel production capacity of 35.7 million tonnes per annum, including 1.5 MTPA capacity in the United States. Domestic crude steel capacity currently stands at 34.2 MTPA.
The company’s next phase of expansion is expected to increase consolidated capacity to 48.9 MTPA over the next four years, reinforcing its ambition to strengthen global competitiveness and support rising steel demand from infrastructure, automotive and industrial sectors.
JSW Steel’s Vijayanagar plant in Karnataka remains the country’s largest single-location steel manufacturing facility, with a current production capacity of 17.5 MTPA. The site continues to play a critical role in the company’s growth strategy through technology upgrades, operational improvements and sustainability initiatives.
The company has also built strong technological capabilities through its strategic partnership with JFE STEEL of Japan. This collaboration enables access to advanced steelmaking technologies and supports the production of specialised high-value steel products used across industries including construction, infrastructure, automotive, appliances and electrical applications.
Alongside operational growth, JSW Steel has maintained a strong focus on sustainability and responsible manufacturing practices. The company has been recognised as a Steel Sustainability Champion by the World Steel Association for seven consecutive years from 2019 to 2025.
The company is also included in major sustainability benchmarks such as the FTSE4Good Index and the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices for both World and Emerging Markets. JSW Steel was ranked first globally in the steel sector in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2025.
Four of the company’s operational sites have now achieved ResponsibleSteel certification, covering more than 80 percent of domestic crude steel production. Its Sustainable Energy Environment & Decarbonisation (SEED) initiative also received recognition at COP28 for contributions toward industrial energy transition.
JSW Steel has committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions from steelmaking operations by 42 percent by 2030 and achieving net-neutral carbon emissions across all directly controlled operations by 2050. The company is additionally working toward powering steelmaking operations entirely through renewable energy sources by 2030.
