Primetals Technologies has introduced a new electric arc furnace (EAF) solution designed to enhance efficiency and reduce capital expenditure for steel producers. The newly launched EAF Ultimate Move represents the latest step in the company’s long-standing innovation in electric steelmaking, offering a practical response to the evolving demands of the industry.
Developed to support steelmakers during the ongoing transition toward more sustainable production methods, the EAF Ultimate Move focuses on delivering high productivity while keeping investment costs under control. The system enables shorter tap-to-tap times and requires a more compact plant layout, resulting in measurable savings in infrastructure and operational expenses. Reduced maintenance requirements further contribute to overall cost efficiency.
The addition of the EAF Ultimate Move strengthens Primetals Technologies’ comprehensive EAF portfolio, where each solution is tailored to specific production goals. The new furnace is particularly suited for operators seeking maximum flexibility without compromising product quality or raw material versatility. It allows for the use of a wide range of input materials, including combinations involving hot metal, offering producers greater control over their processes.
According to Hans-JoergKrassnig, Head of Electric Steelmaking at Primetals Technologies, the development reflects the company’s approach of integrating proven technologies into advanced solutions. By combining key features from earlier designs, the EAF Ultimate Move expands operational capabilities while maintaining reliability.
The system incorporates elements inspired by the EAF Quantum, including a movable furnace shell that can be exchanged toward the teeming bay. This design reduces the overall footprint of the facility and lowers the need for auxiliary equipment such as cranes and structural supports. The use of a mobile support frame and an adapted hydraulic tilting system simplifies maintenance and reduces construction requirements.
Additional features include single-bucket charging, single-point roof swiveling, and the Furnace Advanced Slag-Free Tapping (FAST) system. The FAST technology allows tapping and tap-hole filling to occur while the furnace remains powered, significantly improving cycle times and operational efficiency.
