Shilpa Shrotriya, Managing Partner of Maruti International

“Earlier it was quite tough because there was a kid inside, so there was a desire to roam around or bunk college and all”- remembers Shilpa Shrotriya. Now the Managing Partner of Maruti International, from an early age, Shilpa was encouraged by her father to be involved in the family business. Even during her 12th grade, while others enjoyed college life, she spent time at the factory, learning customer and vendor interactions. Though initially challenging, she later realized the value of this experience. After completing her 12th, she pursued commerce, leveraging the flexibility to deepen her understanding of business—an early foundation that shaped her journey in manufacturing.

A Legacy Built on Determination

Founded in 2005 by her father, Shri Raghunath Natu, Maruti International has been a key player in the manufacturing and export of CNC Machine Lamps, LED Arm Machine Lamps, LED Flood Lights, LED Street Lights, LED Downlights, and more. Shilpa joined the company right after completing her 12th grade, balancing her education alongside her professional responsibilities. She pursued a bachelor’s in commerce and business management, followed by a Post-Graduate Diploma and a Master’s in Finance. She further strengthened her business acumen with an MBA in Finance.

The turning point in her journey came in 2009 when Maruti International expanded its product line to include LED lighting solutions. Initially handling only the production aspect of the business, Shilpa’s role evolved significantly after the passing of her father and business partner. Taking full charge of the company, she relocated to Pune, where she now oversees Pan-India marketing operations.

Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Industry

Navigating the manufacturing sector as a woman posed significant challenges for Shilpa. From dealing with banks and accounts to managing employees and government compliances, every step demanded immense effort and perseverance. She recalls her early days of running errands at government offices to get GST and other formalities completed at the young age of 18.

Being a woman in this industry meant that people often hesitated to discuss business matters openly with her. However, she overcame this by maintaining constant follow-ups and gradually earning the trust and respect of her peers and clients. “Initially it was quite tough because there was a kid inside, so like we also had to roam around, you know, everyone was roaming around in the college and everything. So we also used to feel that we also have to go, bunk college and all, used to, you know, initially, but as in now we, you know, got to know the importance of the company and that time I realized whatever my father was telling me, it was the correct path he was saying,” she reflects.

Her brother, who was initially based in Saudi Arabia, later joined the company following their father’s demise, and together they have been steering the business toward greater heights. Rajiv Natu looks after Production and R&D and Chimay Natu is in charge of exports. She is thankful to both her brothers, Rajiv Natu and Chinmay Natu, who were always there to support her and had faith in her.

Championing Women in Manufacturing

Despite the challenges, Shilpa has remained committed to fostering an inclusive work environment. She takes immense pride in the fact that her Pune branch comprises an all-female workforce, including sales, accounts, and field staff. Across all branches, approximately 55% of the employees are women.

“It is really a good feeling because I can see the change in the industry. Twelve years ago, when we visited manufacturing sites, there were only men. But now, in designing departments and other key areas, we see more and more women” she says.

Vision for the Future: Accelerating Action

As part of the International Women’s Day 2025 theme, #AccelerateAction, Shilpa’s journey embodies the spirit of transformation and empowerment. She attributes her success to her father’s teachings and remains dedicated to creating employment opportunities. “My father gave me a clear vision, and I completely agree with him that being both a woman and an entrepreneur is something unique; this combination is not commonly found. Moreover, I strongly believe that entrepreneurship is not just about personal success but also about being the reason so many individuals can support their families.

The ability to provide salaries and financial stability to our employees is something I consider a privilege. Today, we are responsible for supporting 20-25 individuals, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had this opportunity at the right time. Initially, my vision was that if I pursued a job, it would benefit only me. However, as an entrepreneur, I was able to create opportunities for five people at the start, and today, that number has grown to 25. My goal has always been to contribute meaningfully, and I remain committed to expanding this impact even further.”, she asserts.

Her vision aligns with the larger goal of empowering more women in manufacturing and encouraging them to take leadership roles. She believes that with determination, self-confidence, and perseverance, women can thrive in any industry.

A Message to Aspiring Women Entrepreneurs

Shilpa’s story is one of unwavering belief in oneself. She encourages aspiring female entrepreneurs to trust their abilities and work hard to achieve their goals. “The journey is never easy, but with persistence, anything is possible,” she concludes.

Her story  is a light of inspiration, demonstrating that gender is no barrier to success in the manufacturing industry. Through her leadership, she continues to accelerate action, setting an example for many to follow.
