Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd (Waaree ESS), a subsidiary of Waaree Energies Limited, has commenced operations at its advanced Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) container manufacturing facility, marking the first phase of the company’s long-term plan to establish 20 GWh of integrated energy storage manufacturing capacity in India.

The newly commissioned facility has an annual manufacturing capacity of 5.15 GWh, an increase from the originally planned 3.5 GWh. The capacity expansion has been achieved through improvements in production efficiency and the use of higher energy-density battery cells. The facility is designed to manufacture battery energy storage containers for utility-scale renewable energy projects as well as commercial and industrial applications.

Equipped with Industry 4.0 technologies, the plant features automated guided vehicles (AGVs), intelligent material handling systems, automated assembly lines and advanced quality testing processes. These technologies are expected to enhance manufacturing efficiency while ensuring consistent product quality and reliability.

The BESS container facility forms the first milestone in Waaree ESS’s integrated manufacturing roadmap. During the current financial year, the company plans to operationalise an additional 5.15 GWh battery pack manufacturing facility, upgraded from the initially planned 3.5 GWh, along with a 3.5 GWh lithium cell manufacturing plant. Together, these facilities will create an end-to-end domestic manufacturing ecosystem covering lithium cells, battery packs and battery energy storage systems.

The investment is aimed at supporting India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy sector, where battery storage is becoming increasingly important for balancing electricity supply and demand. Battery Energy Storage Systems enable surplus electricity generated from solar and wind projects to be stored and supplied during periods of peak demand, improving grid reliability, reducing renewable energy curtailment and lowering dependence on conventional power generation.

The integrated manufacturing programme is expected to strengthen India’s clean energy infrastructure while reducing reliance on imported energy storage technologies. It also supports the Government of India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives by promoting domestic manufacturing of advanced clean energy technologies.

Sunil Rathi, Director, Waaree, said battery energy storage systems will play a central role in India’s transition towards a renewable energy-driven power sector. He noted that reliable and locally manufactured storage solutions are essential for improving grid stability, strengthening energy security and supporting sustainable economic growth.

He added that the commissioning of the advanced BESS container manufacturing facility represents an important step in building a comprehensive energy storage ecosystem in India. With plans to establish manufacturing capacities for lithium cells, battery packs and battery energy storage systems, Waaree ESS aims to deliver globally competitive energy storage solutions designed and manufactured in India.

Waaree Energy Storage Solutions develops advanced battery technologies and integrated energy storage systems for utilities, commercial and industrial customers, and infrastructure projects. Through investments in domestic manufacturing and technology development, the company is working to build a complete energy storage value chain that supports India’s renewable energy targets and strengthens its position as a global hub for clean energy manufacturing.
