Vikram Solar, one of India’s leading solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturers, has marked a major milestone in its expansion journey with the successful rollout of the first solar module from its newly commissioned manufacturing facility at Gangaikondan in Tamil Nadu. The commissioning of the state-of-the-art greenfield plant reinforces the company’s commitment to strengthening domestic solar manufacturing and supporting India’s clean energy ambitions through advanced technology and large-scale production capabilities.
Spread across approximately six lakh square feet, the new facility represents the latest addition to Vikram Solar’s growing manufacturing network. Designed as a next-generation smart factory, the plant incorporates advanced automation and digital manufacturing systems to deliver high levels of efficiency, precision and product quality. The project is also expected to generate employment for more than 1,500 skilled professionals, contributing to industrial development and economic growth in the region.
The commissioning follows the recent launch of the company’s Vallam manufacturing facility and reflects Vikram Solar’s continued investment in expanding its production footprint. Over the past two decades, the company has consistently enhanced its manufacturing capabilities, and the Gangaikondan plant represents another significant step towards building a globally competitive solar manufacturing ecosystem in India.
The facility has been equipped with intelligent manufacturing technologies that enable real-time production monitoring, end-to-end traceability, automated quality inspection and advanced material handling. Automated grading, sorting and packaging systems ensure every module meets stringent quality standards before dispatch, while digital process controls minimise manual intervention and enhance manufacturing consistency.
The first modules produced at the facility are Vikram Solar’s advanced Hypersol N-Type TOPCon G12R modules, offering power outputs ranging from 615 Wp to 640 Wp with module efficiencies of up to 23.69 percent. The high-performance modules are designed to meet the growing demand for efficient and reliable solar solutions across utility-scale, commercial and industrial applications.
The Gangaikondan campus forms the cornerstone of Vikram Solar’s long-term strategy to establish a fully integrated solar manufacturing ecosystem. Over the coming years, the company plans to progressively add solar cell, wafer and ingot manufacturing at the same location, bringing the complete solar value chain under one roof. This integrated approach is expected to strengthen supply chain resilience, improve quality control, reduce logistics costs and significantly increase domestic value addition.
As part of its expansion roadmap, Vikram Solar plans to establish 9 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity by FY27, add another 3 GW by FY28, and develop 12 GW of wafer and ingot manufacturing capacity by FY29-30. These investments are aligned with India’s vision of building a self-reliant clean energy manufacturing ecosystem while reducing dependence on imports.
Commenting on the milestone, Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman & Managing Director, Vikram Solar, said, “The rollout of the first module from our Gangaikondan facility marks an important milestone in our growth journey. Having surpassed 10 GW of cumulative global module deployments earlier this year, we are expanding our manufacturing capacity in line with growing market demand. As we progressively integrate cell, wafer and ingot manufacturing at this campus, we are creating a robust manufacturing platform that strengthens supply chain resilience, enhances domestic value creation and supports India’s clean energy goals. This facility represents not just additional capacity but a long-term investment in the future of Indian solar manufacturing.”
Headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, Vikram Solar is among India’s largest PV module manufacturers, with a cumulative production capacity of 9.5 GW and exports spanning 39 countries. The company has been recognised as a Top Performer in PVEL’s PV Module Reliability Scorecard and has featured in BloombergNEF’s Tier 1 solar PV module manufacturer list for eight consecutive quarters. Across India, Vikram Solar operates through a network of more than 105 authorised distributors, over 435 dealers and 77 system integrators.
