Vedanta Ltd is actively acquiring land for its upcoming 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) aluminium smelter project in Dhenkanal, Odisha, according to a senior company executive. “We are progressing towards establishing a new large-scale aluminium plant in Dhenkanal with a capacity of three million tonnes,” said Rajiv Kumar, CEO of Vedanta’s Aluminium business, speaking to media on the sidelines of ALUMEX India 2025, held in New Delhi from September 10–13.
Currently, Vedanta’s total aluminium production capacity stands at 3 MTPA. The company aims to double this to 6 MTPA, and the new smelter is a key part of this expansion strategy. “We are actively engaged in land acquisition for the project, and the process is moving in the right direction,” Kumar added.
The proposed greenfield smelter is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, potentially creating over 200,000 jobs, he noted. However, he also highlighted that aluminium manufacturing is capital-intensive, and a facility of this scale would typically require three to four years to become operational.
Vedanta is already a major producer and exporter of aluminium billets—an essential input for the extrusion sector. The company is currently producing 580 kilo tonnes of billets annually and plans to double this capacity in the near future.
In addition, Kumar shared that Vedanta is planning to develop a new aluminium park in Jharsuguda, Odisha. The company is inviting downstream manufacturers to set up their facilities within the park, aiming to boost domestic value addition and create a robust ecosystem for the aluminium industry.
ALUMEX India 2025, organized by the Aluminium Extrusion Manufacturers Association of India (ALEMAI), is India’s first dedicated exhibition for the aluminium extrusion sector. The event is expected to host over 200 exhibitors and attract around 25,000 business visitors from across the aluminium value chain.
