Vedanta Ltd announced on Monday that it has invested more than ₹12,500 crore to enhance its metal manufacturing capabilities in response to the rising demands of India’s electric vehicle (EV) sector. The company produces a diverse range of metals, including aluminium, zinc, value-added alloys, copper, steel, nickel, and ferrochrome.
“To support the growing requirements of the EV industry, Vedanta has invested over ₹12,500 crore in capacity expansions across its operations. These include boosting aluminium smelter capacity, enhancing aluminium value-added products, setting up a zinc alloy plant, installing a roaster for zinc production, and increasing ferrochrome production capacity,” the company stated.
Vedanta’s aluminium offerings feature primary foundry alloys used in wheels, engine blocks, and cylinder-head applications, as well as billets for battery casings, heating and air conditioning systems, and EV frames. The company is also working on aluminium innovations, including crash-resistant alloys and energy storage solutions.
Increasing aluminium usage in EVs helps extend driving range by offsetting battery weight, which in turn lowers the total cost of ownership. Studies indicate that every 1 kg of aluminium used reduces vehicle weight by 1 kg, and a 100 kg reduction in EV weight can lead to a potential 10–15% increase in driving range.
Vedanta is also a leading producer of primary nickel, a critical component in EV batteries and alloy formulations. Nickel enhances both energy storage capacity and structural integrity of EV parts. The company additionally produces nickel sulphate, an essential ingredient in nickel-rich cathodes that enable cleaner, more efficient mobility solutions.
Vedanta Ltd is a leading global natural resources company, engaged in mining, oil, and gas exploration. With operations spanning India, Africa, and Australia, it specializes in zinc, lead, silver, copper, iron ore, and aluminum. The company focuses on sustainable development, innovation, and value creation, driving growth through its diversified portfolio of high-quality resources.
