Vedanta Cuts Metals Emissions Intensity by 15%

Marking World Environment Day, Vedanta Group announced significant progress in its sustainability and decarbonization journey, achieving a 15% reduction in metals emissions intensity since FY21. The company reported a decline in emissions intensity from 6.45 tCO₂e per tonne of metal in FY21 to 5.44 tCO₂e per tonne in FY26, reflecting sustained investments in cleaner technologies, renewable energy integration, and operational efficiency.

The achievement forms part of Vedanta’s broader strategy to support industrial growth while advancing environmental responsibility across its businesses spanning metals, mining, oil and gas, power, and critical minerals. A key contributor to the company’s progress has been the rapid expansion of renewable energy consumption. During FY26, Vedanta increased renewable power usage by more than 50 percent year-on-year, reaching nearly 400 crore units. The renewable energy portfolio now represents approximately 454 MW of round-the-clock clean energy capacity and helped avoid nearly 30 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions during the year.

Vedanta has also accelerated the use of alternative fuels across its operations. The company deployed 365 kilotonnes of biomass fuel in FY26, resulting in an estimated reduction of up to six lakh tonnes of carbon emissions. A major share of this deployment came from Talwandi Sabo Power Limited, where biomass now accounts for more than five percent of the plant’s fuel mix, supporting a gradual shift toward lower-carbon energy sources.

The company’s sustainability roadmap is built around four pillars: enhancing operational efficiency through advanced technologies, increasing renewable energy adoption, transitioning to cleaner fuels, and offsetting residual emissions through ecosystem restoration and carbon sequestration initiatives.

Vedanta continues to strengthen its environmental stewardship programs through large-scale afforestation. Since FY21, the company has planted nearly 40 lakh trees across operational regions and remains on track to achieve its target of 70 lakh trees by 2030 under the World Economic Forum’s 1 Trillion Trees initiative. During FY26 alone, close to 10 lakh trees were planted across mining and industrial landscapes to support biodiversity restoration and long-term carbon capture.

As demand rises for transition materials such as aluminium, zinc, silver, copper, iron ore, and steel, Vedanta remains focused on building a future-ready business model that combines industrial growth with responsible resource management, climate resilience, and sustainable value creation. Vedanta operates across India, South Africa, Namibia, Liberia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. It is the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, the fourth-largest silver producer, and among the top aluminium producers. The company is also India’s only private oil and gas producer and one of the largest private power generators. Vedanta has committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier and has improved the lives of nearly 7 million people through its social development initiative
