On National Science Day, Vedanta Aluminium reaffirmed its commitment to advancing India’s scientific and technological capabilities through research-led manufacturing, digital integration and applied engineering across its operations. As India’s largest aluminium producer, the company has built a strong scientific workforce comprising metallurgists, chemists, process engineers, data scientists and digital experts. More than 800 women professionals are engaged in core scientific, technical and engineering roles, accounting for 20% of its scientific and technical workforce. Their contributions are strengthening India’s expanding innovation landscape.
Vedanta Aluminium continues to drive progress in resource-efficient refining, materials science, energy optimisation, sustainable mining and digital manufacturing. Among its recent advancements is a proprietary refining process that reduces bauxite residue generation by 30%, improves alumina recovery and enhances overall sustainability in refining operations.
The company is also undertaking a collaborative research programme with ICAR-CTCRI to convert red mud into a nutrient-rich growth medium aimed at supporting land restoration and ecological renewal. This initiative reflects its approach to integrating scientific research with environmental stewardship.
Digital transformation remains central to its operational strategy. AI-enabled process optimisation, predictive maintenance systems, remote operations and machine-learning-based monitoring are being deployed across facilities to enhance efficiency, reliability and safety. Supporting these initiatives is a dedicated Research and Development ecosystem that works closely with customers, academic institutions and research partners to develop customised product and process solutions.
This year’s National Science Day theme, “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat,” highlights the growing influence of women in shaping India’s scientific progress. In line with this vision, Vedanta Aluminium has expanded women’s participation across key operational areas. Women professionals are leading smelter lines, managing locomotive operations, supervising power plant units, serving in firefighting and security teams, and handling instrumentation, process engineering and industrial automation functions. The company’s target of achieving 20% gender diversity by 2030 reflects its long-term commitment to inclusive growth.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, stated that innovation, research and modern engineering will play a decisive role in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation. He noted that the company’s scientific talent pool, including women leading complex technical functions, strengthens operational resilience and enhances competitiveness.
