Vedanta Aluminium Expands Electric Forklift Fleet to Boost Sustainability

Vedanta Aluminium, India’s top aluminium producer, has expanded its fleet of electric lithium-ion forklifts to 66 units, making it the biggest user of these forklifts in India. The company added 22 more electric forklifts at its smelter in Jharsuguda, Odisha, to further its sustainable operations.

John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, said, “Sustainability is essential for us. Adding 66 electric forklifts is a big step towards our Net Zero goal.” These forklifts, used in Jharsuguda, Lanjigarh (Odisha), and BALCO smelter (Chhattisgarh), have fast and safe battery charging.

They improve efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, with a potential reduction of 2,500 tonnes of CO2 annually and saving over 840,000 litres of diesel per year. Vedanta Aluminium aims to decarbonize 100% of its light motor vehicle fleet by 2030.

This effort supports their Net Zero by 2050 goal through operational excellence and increasing renewable energy use. The company also engages in extensive afforestation to offset its carbon footprint. Vedanta Aluminium produced 2.37 million tonnes of aluminium in FY24, leading in value-added aluminium products. It ranks 1st in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023 for the aluminium industry, showcasing its commitment to sustainable practices.

It leads in creating value-added aluminium products used in key industries. Vedanta Aluminium secured the top spot in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023 for the aluminium sector, highlighting its outstanding sustainable development practices.
