Vedanta Aluminium has received the Kalinga Environment Excellence Award and the Kalinga Energy Excellence Award for its alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha. These awards were given by the Institute of Quality and Environment Management along with the Odisha State Pollution Control Board and the Institute of Public Enterprise, Hyderabad.

Vedanta Aluminium’s Lanjigarh unit is known for producing smelter-grade alumina and has taken significant steps to achieve sustainability goals. These include aiming for Net Zero Carbon by 2050 and Net Water Positivity by 2030. The unit has also been recognized for effective waste management, biodiversity restoration, and using energy-efficient technologies.

John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, expressed pride in their achievements, highlighting the company’s commitment to balancing operational efficiency with sustainability. He emphasized that these awards reflect their dedication to maintaining a sustainable business model.

Vedanta Aluminium is also focused on meeting national needs while caring for the environment. The company has increased the use of renewable energy sources, such as biomass in boiler co-firing and lithium-ion electric forklifts, and encourages employees to use electric vehicles. These efforts have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by about 9.3% in FY24 compared to FY21, while production increased by 20%.

Water conservation is another key area of focus, with Vedanta Aluminium recycling over 15 billion liters of water in FY24. The company also works with local communities to ensure a positive water footprint and monitors water levels constantly.

The company utilizes bauxite residue and fly ash, by-products of the refining and power generation processes, in activities like road construction and soil consolidation. These initiatives have led to over 200% utilization of waste in FY23.

Vedanta Aluminium, part of Vedanta Limited, is India’s largest aluminium producer, manufacturing over half of the country’s aluminium. It ranks first in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023 for the aluminium industry, with world-class smelters, a refinery, and power plants in India.
