Vedanta Aluminium, recognized as India’s foremost aluminium producer, has recently achieved a significant milestone in its expansion endeavors, aiming to secure a position among the top three global players in the aluminium sector. This achievement comes as the company successfully inaugurated a new 1.5 MTPA expansion at its state-of-the-art alumina refinery located in Lanjigarh, Odisha. This expansion marks a substantial step towards the company’s objective of achieving complete vertical integration and further enhancing its production capacity to 3.5 MTPA, up from the previous 2 MTPA.
This strategic expansion initiative is part of Vedanta Aluminium’s larger plan to elevate the Lanjigarh refinery’s overall nameplate capacity from the current 2 MTPA to an impressive 5 MTPA. Such expansion efforts are crucial to support the company’s escalating aluminium production requirements. Vedanta Aluminium boasts one of the widest arrays of high-quality aluminium products globally, including its innovative low-carbon ‘green’ aluminium range known as Restora. These products cater to critical needs in various sectors such as automotive, aerospace, defence, infrastructure, power projects, electricals, and packaging, among others.
Moreover, Vedanta Aluminium is also a leading producer of premier smelter-grade alumina (SGA) in India, serving as a vital raw material for its aluminium plants in Jharsuguda (Odisha) and BALCO (Chhattisgarh). John Slaven, the CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, expressed his delight regarding the commissioning of the expanded capacity, emphasizing its role in enhancing raw material security and cost reduction for the company’s Jharsuguda and BALCO aluminium smelters. He highlighted that this expansion is a significant stride towards achieving complete vertical integration, reinforcing the company’s position for sustainable growth in the global aluminium market.
