The US Department of the Navy has awarded Raytheon, an RTX business, a contract valued at $22.9 billion to accelerate production of Tomahawk missiles, supporting the US military’s long-range strike requirements. Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao announced the award, describing the investment as a major step towards increasing the availability of Tomahawk missiles for US forces. The contract is aimed at reducing procurement lead times and expanding production capacity for the long-range strike system.
“This landmark $22.9 billion investment accelerates the delivery of Tomahawk missiles to our warfighters at unprecedented speed,” said Mr Cao. “By working closely with industry to expand the capacity of our munitions industrial base, the Department is utilizing every available tool to meet the demands of current operations.”
The award forms part of the US Department of War’s efforts to increase the speed at which critical military capabilities are delivered. It also supports wider plans to expand the country’s munitions production base and strengthen supply chains. Michael P Duffey, Under Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment, said the department had asked industry to increase munitions production and capacity and that RTX had responded to the requirement.
The contract is expected to provide greater stability and predictability for production planning. This can support increased manufacturing throughput, workforce expansion and stronger supply chains across the defence industrial base. The award also reflects changes in the Navy’s approach to weapons acquisition. Under the strategic direction of Portfolio Acquisition Executive (PAE) Munitions, the Navy is working to improve coordination across weapons programmes, strengthen partnerships with industry and accelerate the delivery of munitions.
PAE Munitions is responsible for the development, procurement and delivery of naval munitions and strike capabilities. The organisation brings together key weapons programmes and works with the industrial base to increase production capacity and improve delivery timelines. Tomahawk is a long-range strike missile used by the US Navy for precision attacks against targets at extended distances. The system forms part of the US military’s long-range strike capability.
The latest contract is intended to support faster production while strengthening the industrial infrastructure required to supply the Navy and Marine Corps. Increased production capacity is also expected to support the availability of critical weapons for future operations. The Department of the Navy said the investment reinforces its focus on rebuilding the defence industrial base and ensuring that naval forces have access to the weapons required to maintain maritime capabilities.
