Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, addressed the 4th Edition of FICCI’s LEADS on the theme “Collaborations for Growth in a Transformative World,” emphasising green finance as the foundation for sustainable and inclusive economic development. Speaking on the critical role of sustainable investments, Shri Yadav stressed that aligning economic growth with ecological well-being and social progress is essential for future-ready economies.

Highlighting India’s developmental journey, the Minister pointed out that industrialisation over the past two centuries has contributed to global environmental challenges. He noted that rising global temperatures, particularly the 1.5 to 2°C thresholds, are a stark reminder that economic growth must account for environmental costs. Shri Yadav underlined that nations like India face the dual responsibility of meeting the aspirations of a young population while protecting the planet from climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecological degradation.

Shri Yadav said green finance is not a niche intervention but the backbone of resilient economies, calling for capital flows that deliver economic returns while promoting sustainability across infrastructure, agriculture, industry, and transport. He cited India’s issuance of sovereign green bonds, regulatory initiatives by the RBI and SEBI, and blended finance mechanisms as key steps to attract and de-risk investments in renewable energy, electric mobility, energy efficiency, and nature-based solutions.

The Minister also highlighted India’s Green Credit Programme and the operationalisation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, emphasising that high-integrity carbon markets and voluntary environmental action can mobilise significant finance for climate initiatives. He called for inclusive financing that benefits MSMEs, farmers, and vulnerable communities, leveraging innovation, fintech, and AI-driven platforms to scale green investment.

Concluding his address, Shri Yadav urged all stakeholders to treat financing the green transition as an ethical obligation, reaffirming India’s commitment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lead sustainable growth, meet climate responsibilities, and safeguard the planet for future generations.
