Marking World Youth Skills Day, Tata Motors has achieved a significant milestone under its Kaushalya Programme by successfully training and certifying the first all-female batch of tribal girls in motor mechanics in Jharkhand. The group, comprising 13 young women from Chandil, Jamshedpur, and Potka, completed a rigorous Mechanical Motor Vehicle (MMV) training course.
The programme included 50 days of classroom sessions covering commercial vehicle systems, followed by a full year of hands-on training at authorised workshops and dealerships. The participants were provided with uniforms, safety equipment, accommodation, and a monthly stipend throughout the training.
For many of these young women, the journey was life-changing. Coming from financially struggling families and having discontinued formal education, they faced numerous challenges in stepping into a field traditionally dominated by men. Tata Motors, in partnership with Vikas Samities, a community-led organisation, tackled these hurdles by engaging with families, local leaders, and schools to ensure support and acceptance.
Vinod Kulkarni, who leads Corporate Social Responsibility at Tata Motors, highlighted the impact of the initiative, stating that bringing in an all-girls batch was a deliberate move to help young women from disadvantaged areas explore career paths previously seen as off-limits. With a strong support system and dedicated training environment, these girls have not only learned valuable skills but also overcome societal norms that once held them back.
The success of the programme showcases how meaningful skill-building efforts can open up new career avenues. These girls have not only acquired technical knowledge but have also gained confidence, independence, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Their stories stand as proof that given the right platform, young women from remote regions can take bold steps into industries traditionally seen as inaccessible. The initiative has helped break gender stereotypes while building a stronger, more inclusive workforce.
As India works to empower its young population, programmes like Kaushalya reflect the role that companies can play in supporting community progress through practical, hands-on training. By focusing on employability and inclusion, Tata Motors is contributing to long-term social impact.
The training has already opened doors for these young women, many of whom are now pursuing placements in service centres and showrooms across the region. Their determination is paving the way for more girls from rural and tribal areas to dream big. This pioneering batch has become an inspiration for others in their communities, showing that skill development can lead not just to jobs, but to a transformation in mindset and opportunity.
