TotalEnergies has announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Umm Shaif Gas Cap development, a major offshore natural gas project located within the Umm Shaif and Nasr concession in Abu Dhabi. The development represents another milestone in the company’s long-term partnership with ADNOC and supports the United Arab Emirates’ strategy to expand domestic gas production while advancing lower-emission energy projects.

The Umm Shaif and Nasr offshore concession is operated by ADNOC Offshore, with ADNOC holding a 60% interest. TotalEnergies owns a 20% participating stake, while CNPC and ENI each hold 10%. The project is expected to deliver more than 600 million cubic feet of natural gas per day by 2030 through the development of gas cap reserves situated above the field’s existing oil reservoirs. In addition to increasing gas production, the development has been designed to optimize condensate recovery and improve the overall value of one of Abu Dhabi’s longest-producing offshore assets.

Production from the Umm Shaif field began in 1962, making it the emirate’s oldest offshore oil field. The latest investment will build on existing infrastructure, enabling the partners to develop additional gas resources while reducing capital costs and improving operational efficiency. The project will also utilize electricity supplied from the UAE’s power grid, helping lower operational emissions and supporting the country’s broader sustainability objectives.

The development has been designed with future expansion in mind. The infrastructure can support production growth of up to 1.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day in subsequent phases, providing additional flexibility to meet rising domestic energy demand and strengthen the UAE’s integrated gas value chain.

The investment follows the award of the Umm Shaif and Nasr concession in 2018 under a 40-year agreement and reinforces the long-standing collaboration between TotalEnergies, ADNOC, and their partners. As Asset Lead, TotalEnergies continues to work closely with the concession partners to maximize the value of existing offshore resources through efficient project execution and advanced field development.

Commenting on the announcement, Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, said the Final Investment Decision marks an important step in expanding Abu Dhabi’s natural gas production. He noted that the project follows the recent Bab Gas Cap concession award and will contribute to the company’s upstream production beyond 2030 through competitively developed, lower-emission gas resources while supporting the UAE’s long-term energy strategy. The Umm Shaif Gas Cap development reflects the continued commitment of the project partners to strengthening energy security, improving resource recovery, and delivering sustainable growth from Abu Dhabi’s offshore energy assets.
