Texmaco Rail & Engineering Limited has secured a significant international rail business opportunity in South Africa after receiving a Letter of Award from a South African Train Operating Company for the supply of freight wagons and diesel locomotives. The opportunity, valued at more than ₹4,045 crore, marks one of the largest international rolling stock engagements secured by the company and strengthens its long-term strategy to expand across global railway and freight mobility markets.
Under the proposed engagement, Texmaco will supply more than 2,235 freight wagons across multiple configurations along with 30 diesel locomotives designed to support freight transportation and logistics operations within South Africa’s evolving rail ecosystem. In addition to rolling stock supply, the project also includes a proposed long-term maintenance arrangement extending up to 15 years. The maintenance partnership is expected to create a substantial lifecycle services business opportunity for the company in Southern Africa.
The development comes at a time when South Africa is implementing structural reforms in its freight rail sector under an emerging Open Access rail framework designed to improve private sector participation, strengthen freight connectivity, and modernize rail infrastructure. Industry observers view the reforms as a major growth catalyst for rolling stock modernization, mining logistics, freight mobility, and rail infrastructure investments across the African region.
Texmaco stated that the order opportunity significantly enhances the company’s presence within the African rail ecosystem and could create additional opportunities in wagon supply, refurbishment, locomotive modernization, maintenance services, and rail infrastructure projects across multiple countries in the region. The company also indicated that the project may support phased localization initiatives and strategic industrial partnerships within Southern Africa over the longer term.
Commenting on the development, Sudipta Mukherjee, Managing Director of Texmaco Rail & Engineering, said South Africa represents an important freight rail market with strong long-term potential and increasing investment opportunities. He noted that the project reflects growing international recognition of Indian rail engineering capabilities, manufacturing expertise, and integrated mobility solutions developed by domestic rail companies.
Texmaco added that the company will pursue the project with a balanced and prudent execution approach while closely monitoring evolving geopolitical conditions, commodity price movements, currency fluctuations, and supply-chain dynamics associated with long-duration international infrastructure programs. The order further reinforces Texmaco’s transformation into an integrated rail and mobility solutions company with expanding international operations and long-term global growth ambitions.
