Tata Steel Limited has been recognised as a Steel Sustainability Champion 2026 by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), marking the ninth consecutive year the company has received this distinction. The recognition places Tata Steel among a select group of global steelmakers demonstrating consistent commitment to sustainable development.
The Steel Sustainability Champions programme honours member companies that actively contribute to worldsteel’s sustainability initiatives and meet rigorous performance benchmarks. Tata Steel is among only two companies to have received this recognition every year since the programme was introduced in 2018, underscoring its sustained focus on responsible operations.
TV Narendran, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, stated that sustainability remains central to Tata Steel’s business approach. He highlighted the company’s efforts in improving resource efficiency, advancing low-carbon technologies, and creating long-term value for stakeholders. He added that the continued recognition reflects the organisation’s commitment to responsible steelmaking practices.
The award acknowledges Tata Steel’s ongoing work in embedding sustainability across its operations. This includes initiatives to optimise material usage, reduce emissions, and adopt innovative technologies that support the transition towards low-carbon steel production. The company has also been actively involved in global efforts to address climate challenges within the steel sector.
To qualify for the recognition, companies are required to meet stringent criteria set by worldsteel. These include adherence to the Sustainability Charter and strong performance across key indicators such as environmental management systems, safety standards, employee development, and investment in advanced technologies. Participants are also required to submit Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data to support global benchmarking and transparency.
Tata Steel continues to participate in worldsteel’s Climate Action programme, focusing on reducing the carbon footprint of its operations and products. The company has outlined a long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045, supported by a series of technology-driven initiatives and process improvements.
With an annual crude steel capacity of approximately 35 million tonnes, Tata Steel is among the leading global steel producers, with a presence across multiple geographies. The group reported consolidated revenues of around US$26 billion for the financial year ending March 31, 2025, and employs more than 76,000 people worldwide.
The company’s manufacturing facilities have also received global recognition, including the World Economic Forum’s Global Lighthouse status for its plants in Jamshedpur, Kalinganagar, and IJmuiden. These achievements reflect Tata Steel’s continued emphasis on innovation, operational excellence, and sustainable growth.
