Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, along with its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover, has commenced operations at its new manufacturing facility in Panapakkam, Ranipet district. The first vehicle to roll out of the plant is the locally manufactured Range Rover Evoque, marking the start of operations at the greenfield facility.

The plant was inaugurated by MK Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, in the presence of state ministers, public representatives, senior officials, and leadership teams from the Tata Group and Jaguar Land Rover. The facility represents the first phase of a larger development plan to manufacture next-generation vehicles, including electric models, for both TMPV and JLR brands.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief Minister said the project reinforces Tamil Nadu’s position as a leading automotive and manufacturing hub and reflects the state’s continued commitment to attracting high-quality investments that generate employment and foster innovation. Mr Chandrasekaran noted that the Panapakkam facility is a key milestone in the Tata Group’s efforts to strengthen India’s role in future-ready and sustainable manufacturing, while deepening its long-standing partnership with the state.

The facility integrates advanced manufacturing systems with a skilled local workforce drawn from across Tamil Nadu. Shopfloor technicians at the plant are enrolled in Tata Motors’ Lakshya programme, an earn-while-you-learn initiative that enables career progression from technical roles into engineering and management. Selected through a state-wide assessment of polytechnic graduates, participants undergo intensive hands-on training at JLR facilities and have the opportunity to pursue company-sponsored engineering degrees while in employment.

Vehicle production at Panapakkam will scale up in phases, with the plant expected to reach its full annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles over the next five to seven years, serving both domestic and international markets. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles plans to invest approximately ₹9,000 crore in the facility, which has the potential to generate over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs. Designed with a strong focus on sustainability, the plant will operate entirely on renewable energy, remain water positive, and adhere to global environmental standards, setting a new benchmark for green automotive manufacturing in India.
