Tata Communications and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles have joined hands to bring in-built 5G cellular connectivity to the newly launched Sierra.ev, supporting the development of software-defined vehicles and connected mobility in India. Under the collaboration, Tata Communications MOVE Connected Vehicle Platform will be integrated with Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ new software-defined vehicle platform, N.IO. The integration is designed to provide seamless connectivity and digital services while creating a technology foundation for future connected vehicle applications.

The deployment will allow the Sierra.ev to support a range of connected features, including secure in-vehicle connectivity, content streaming, faster over-the-air software updates and digital services. Customers will also have the option to purchase additional connectivity subscription packs.

The technology is designed to support both customer-facing and safety-related applications. Emergency calls, remote support and real-time vehicle diagnostics will benefit from continuous connectivity, helping improve vehicle support and responsiveness. As vehicles increasingly become software-defined platforms, continuous connectivity is expected to play a greater role in how customers interact with their vehicles. The collaboration between the two Tata Group companies aims to provide a digital backbone that can support new features and services throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.

Vivek Manglik, Executive Vice President – Interaction Fabric, Tata Communications, said the collaboration with Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reflects the changing role of digital technology in automobiles. He said connected vehicles are evolving into intelligent ecosystems, making secure connectivity an important foundation for new services and applications.

Sven Patuschka, Chief Technology Officer, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., said the Sierra.ev represents an important step in the company’s move towards software-defined vehicles. He added that the partnership with Tata Communications will provide the connectivity infrastructure required for continuous innovation and enhanced in-vehicle experiences.

The integration of Tata Communications MOVE with the N.IO platform is expected to help vehicles receive continuous feature updates and support new digital applications without requiring major changes to the underlying vehicle architecture. The collaboration also opens opportunities to improve personalisation and infotainment while supporting fleet efficiency and new digital revenue streams. The companies aim to create vehicles that can adapt to changing customer requirements through software and connected services.
