Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited (SWREL), in a 50:50 joint venture with Hassan Allam Construction, has secured a major contract for the development of the West Minya Solar Power Project in Egypt’s Minya Governorate. The award, valued at approximately USD 560 million, represents one of the largest renewable energy infrastructure projects announced in the region this year.
The project comprises a 1,000 MWac solar photovoltaic power plant integrated with a 600 MWh battery energy storage system. Once completed, it will rank among Egypt’s largest utility-scale renewable energy installations, significantly enhancing the country’s clean energy generation capacity and grid stability.
Under the terms of the contract, the joint venture will execute full engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) works for the project. This includes deployment of photovoltaic generation systems, installation of battery energy storage infrastructure, development of grid interconnection facilities, transmission systems, and all associated balance-of-plant components required for seamless project integration and commissioning.
The West Minya project marks the third gigawatt-scale order secured by the company within the last nine months, underscoring strong demand for large renewable energy infrastructure and hybrid solutions combining solar generation with energy storage systems.
Commenting on the development, Chandra Kishore Thakur, Global Chief Executive Officer of Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Group, said the project reflects the company’s expanding role in supporting large-scale energy transitions across emerging markets. He noted that Egypt’s decarbonisation agenda and broader energy security objectives in the Middle East and North Africa region align with the company’s execution capabilities in utility-scale solar and storage projects.
He added that the assignment reinforces client confidence in the organisation’s ability to deliver complex renewable energy systems within defined timelines while maintaining high standards of safety, engineering quality, and operational performance.
