ABB has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Construction and Mining Systems division of Sumitomo Corporation to explore pathways toward reducing emissions in the mining industry. The focus of the agreement is to evaluate electric-powered alternatives for heavy mining machinery as companies around the world shift toward cleaner, more sustainable operations.
This collaboration comes at a time when the mining sector is actively pursuing electrification solutions that meet industrial-scale demands—offering high performance, safety, automation, and resilience in harsh environments. The partnership will investigate strategies for delivering energy to mobile electric equipment, as well as the supporting infrastructure required for both static and dynamic energy transfer.
The two companies will combine their expertise in industrial systems and mining operations to co-develop potential solutions. ABB brings over a century of experience in electrification and automation, while Sumitomo contributes its global reach and strong standing in heavy equipment sectors.
“We anticipate strong engagement between our teams as we work toward practical solutions for electrification and emission reduction,” said Kenichi Hyuga, General Manager of Sumitomo Corporation’s Construction and Mining Systems division. “Our goal is to create meaningful change through technological innovation.”
Joachim Braun, Division President at ABB Process Industries, added, “Decarbonizing heavy machinery is a complex challenge, and partnerships like this are vital. We’re committed to exploring every possible avenue to help industrial operations run leaner and greener.”
The collaboration will begin with a detailed feasibility study, followed by the development of joint business models and engagement strategies tailored to the mining sector. These efforts will also include exploring opportunities with other stakeholders and forming a comprehensive approach to market entry.
“Through this partnership, we aim to bring forward solutions that not only reduce environmental impact but also deliver long-term value for fleet operators,” said Edgar Keller, Division President at ABB Traction. “Our propulsion systems are designed to meet the unique demands of industrial fleets, and we look forward to building on that foundation.”
