ABB India has successfully provided advanced automation and digital technology for IndianOil Corporation Ltd’s extensive oil and gas pipeline network, the largest of its kind in India. Covering over 20,000 kilometers across the country, this network plays a crucial role in meeting India’s energy demands, transporting 125 million metric tons of oil and 49 million metric standard cubic meters of gas each year.
At the heart of this project is ABB’s integration of the Centralized Pipeline Information Management System (CPIMS) for IndianOil. The scope of the work included the design, engineering, supply, and commissioning of the ABB Ability™ SCADAvantage digital platform, which incorporates robust cybersecurity measures and disaster recovery capabilities hosted on the cloud. The project also focused on enabling centralized management of Indian Oil’s pipelines, ensuring more streamlined operations. To support the long-term sustainability of the network, ABB will also provide a 10-year service contract under the ABB Care agreement.
Senthil Kumar N, Director (Pipelines) at IndianOil, commented on the project’s significance, saying, “CPIMS addresses the operational complexities of our vast cross-country pipeline system. By leveraging advanced technology, we aim to replace manual operations, improving efficiency, productivity, and the overall reliability of our pipeline infrastructure.” He also emphasized IndianOil’s long-standing partnership with ABB, which has spanned more than ten years.
G. Balaji, Head of ABB Energy Industries in India, added, “With the growing energy demands globally, ABB is committed to enhancing energy security while optimizing existing systems to be cleaner and more efficient. Our partnership with IndianOil on the CPIMS project will mark a significant improvement in the safety, integrity, and efficiency of pipeline operations, supported by real-time data monitoring and advanced cybersecurity solutions.”
ABB was awarded the contract for the CPIMS project in February 2024 and has successfully designed and delivered the integrated solutions within just one year. The systems are currently being commissioned. As a global leader in electrification and automation, ABB drives sustainable development and resource efficiency. By combining engineering expertise with digital solutions, ABB helps industries achieve optimal performance while improving efficiency and sustainability. With a legacy of over 140 years and a global workforce of around 110,000 employees, ABB is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange (ABBN) and Nasdaq Stockholm.
