Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the nature of entry-level work in India, with more than one-third of tasks traditionally performed by early-career employees now being handled by AI systems, according to a new joint study released by Cognizant and Pearson. The findings highlight both the opportunities and challenges emerging as organizations adapt to an increasingly AI-driven workplace.
The report, titled The AI Workforce Pulse: The Adaptability Imperative, is based on a survey of 750 senior human resources professionals across India, the United States and the United Kingdom. The research indicates that 37 percent of entry-level tasks in India are already automated or supported by AI, surpassing the global average of 33 percent. Additionally, nearly one in five HR leaders reported that AI now performs half or more of entry-level work within their organizations.
The study points to a significant shift in how companies are designing jobs and developing talent. Rather than replacing employees, AI is redefining responsibilities, with organizations increasingly expecting entry-level professionals to work alongside intelligent systems. Nearly all surveyed HR leaders anticipate that entry-level positions will evolve into roles involving oversight, management and evaluation of AI-generated outputs within the next five years.
At the same time, organizations expect entirely new categories of entry-level jobs to emerge as AI adoption expands. Employees will increasingly be required to interpret results, validate recommendations, apply human judgment and ensure responsible use of technology in day-to-day operations.
The findings also reveal a growing emphasis on human-centered and interdisciplinary capabilities. As routine and repetitive tasks become automated, employers are placing greater value on problem-solving, communication, adaptability and critical thinking. Many HR leaders reported increased appreciation for broad educational backgrounds that combine technical knowledge with analytical and creative skills.
Demand for AI-related training has risen sharply across organizations. However, many companies acknowledge that learning and development programmes are struggling to keep pace with the speed of technological change. While a majority of organizations have introduced AI learning initiatives, talent shortages and evolving skill requirements continue to create challenges in workforce readiness.
The report further identifies middle managers as a critical link in successful AI adoption. These leaders are increasingly responsible for helping teams integrate AI into workflows, redefining roles and ensuring employees can effectively use emerging technologies.
Industry leaders said the findings underscore the need for businesses to rethink hiring, training and workforce development strategies. As AI becomes embedded in everyday operations, organizations that invest in continuous learning and adaptability will be best positioned to unlock productivity gains while creating new career opportunities.
