SKF has unveiled ARCTIC15, a newly developed, high-performance bearing steel engineered to meet the demanding requirements of future aeroengine designs. This advanced material combines exceptional temperature resistance and corrosion tolerance, enabling superior bearing performance for engines of tomorrow.

As the global aviation industry advances toward its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, engine manufacturers are designing next-generation propulsion systems capable of delivering greater efficiency and reduced environmental impact. These cutting-edge architectures demand bearings that can operate under higher power density and rotational speeds than ever before—challenges that ARCTIC15 is purpose-built to address.

SKF’s aerospace partners are currently developing jet engines designed to reduce fuel consumption by 20–25%, thereby cutting carbon emissions significantly. The company’s new steel innovation supports this transition by enabling smaller, lighter, and more efficient bearing solutions that meet the elevated performance standards of modern aeroengines.

“Our customers in aviation are pushing the boundaries of engine design to achieve up to 25% fuel efficiency improvements,” said Gregory A  Zimmerman, Director of SKF’s Aerospace Business Unit. “With ARCTIC15, we’ve created a breakthrough alloy that allows for compact, high-load bearings capable of operating under extreme conditions. This technology not only enhances performance but also supports sustainability through improved repairability and lifecycle efficiency.”

The evolution toward these high-performance systems begins with replacing conventional steel rolling elements with ceramic ones. The next leap in performance comes from pairing these ceramics with advanced bearing steels like ARCTIC15, which offer superior strength and heat resistance compared to traditional alloys. These combined innovations pave the way for new aeroengine architectures that deliver greater efficiency, durability, and reliability—further reinforcing SKF’s commitment to developing intelligent, clean, and sustainable rotation technologies for the aerospace sector.
