SJVN has successfully completed the 72-hour trial run of Unit-2 of the 1,320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project in Bihar, marking a major milestone ahead of the unit’s commercial operation. The 660 MW Unit-2 completed its trial run on 31 August 2026. Following the successful operation, SJVN is now preparing the unit for commercial commissioning. The Buxar Thermal Power Project is being developed by SJVN Thermal Private Limited (STPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN. The project comprises two units of 660 MW each, with a total installed capacity of 1,320 MW.

Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, SJVN, congratulated employees and all stakeholders involved in the successful completion of the trial run. He said the achievement brings the company closer to commencing commercial operations of Unit-2. Ajay Kumar Sharma, Director (Personnel), SJVN, described the successful 72-hour trial run as another important milestone for the company. He appreciated the efforts of employees and project teams for completing the work despite various challenges.

Parthajit De, Director (Finance), SJVN, said the successful trial run strengthens the company’s generation portfolio and supports its role as a diversified energy company contributing to India’s growing power requirements. Rajesh Kumar Chandel, Director (Projects), SJVN, also congratulated the teams involved in the project and highlighted the successful completion of the unit as an important achievement in SJVN’s thermal power operations.

Once fully commissioned, the 1,320 MW project is expected to generate approximately 9,828.72 million units of electricity annually. The power generation capacity will add to Bihar’s electricity supply and support the country’s increasing demand for reliable power.

The completion of the Unit-2 trial run follows extensive work involving engineering, construction, equipment installation, testing and commissioning. The successful 72-hour operation provides an important operational validation before the unit enters commercial service.

With two 660 MW units, the Buxar Thermal Power Project represents a significant addition to SJVN’s generation portfolio. The company is expanding its presence across different segments of the energy sector, including hydropower, thermal power, renewable energy and other emerging areas.

The successful trial run of Unit-2 marks a significant step towards the full commissioning of the Buxar project. Once both units are operational, the project will provide substantial additional generation capacity and strengthen SJVN’s contribution to India’s energy security.
