Sigma Advanced Systems Limited has secured an export order worth $104.9 million (approximately ₹1,013 crore) from a North American customer for the manufacture and supply of 147,000 units of next-generation 155mm base bleed artillery shell bodies. The order is scheduled for execution over the next six to twelve months and marks a significant addition to the company’s expanding international defence business.
The contract strengthens Sigma’s position in the global artillery ammunition supply chain, where demand for advanced, long-range ammunition systems continues to rise amid increasing investments in defence preparedness and military modernisation. Building on earlier export programmes for 155mm fuzes and M107 artillery shell bodies, Sigma has expanded its manufacturing capabilities to produce technologically advanced base bleed shell bodies. These projectiles incorporate sophisticated aerodynamic design, propulsion-related technologies, energetic materials and precision engineering to enhance battlefield performance.
Unlike conventional artillery ammunition, base bleed shells are equipped with a gas-generating unit at the rear of the projectile that reduces aerodynamic drag during flight. This design significantly increases firing range while remaining compatible with widely deployed 155mm artillery platforms used by defence forces across the world.
The latest order reflects Sigma’s continued investment in research, engineering and advanced manufacturing. The company has steadily strengthened its expertise in producing complex defence systems that meet stringent international quality and performance standards, enabling it to address the evolving requirements of global customers.
In addition to expanding its export order book, the programme is expected to support improved profitability through higher-value manufacturing. The successful execution of the contract is also expected to reinforce Sigma’s standing as a trusted supplier of advanced artillery components and strengthen its credentials for future opportunities with international defence organisations and original equipment manufacturers.
Commenting on the development, Sunil Kalidindi, CEO and Executive Director, Sigma Advanced Systems Limited, said, “Long-term partnerships in defence manufacturing are built on reliability, quality and consistent execution. This order reflects the confidence our customer has placed in Sigma’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities. It also supports our strategy of expanding our global presence while delivering advanced defence solutions that meet the highest international standards.”
