SHM Shipcare Private Limited has expanded its coastal conservation programme to Mumbai with a beach clean-up drive at Dadar Kirti College Beach. Organised in partnership with the University of Mumbai, the initiative is the third phase of the company’s coastal clean-up campaign, following similar drives in Surat and Goa.

The programme was held under the theme ‘A Cleaner Coast Starts with Champions Who Act’. Volunteers joined the drive to remove litter and waste from the shoreline and spread awareness about responsible waste disposal. The initiative was planned earlier this month around the birthday of SHM Shipcare Chairman Saifuddin Hajee, reflecting the company’s focus on coastal communities and marine conservation.

Marine litter and plastic waste continue to pose serious challenges to coastal environments. Waste entering the sea can damage marine habitats, threaten aquatic life and affect communities that depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. Through its clean-up programme, SHM Shipcare aims to encourage people to take an active role in keeping beaches clean and protecting the marine environment.

Mohammed Hajee, CEO – Marine & Fire Safety, SHM Shipcare, said the sea is central to the company’s work and that protecting the coastline is a shared responsibility. He added that the Mumbai initiative aims to bring people together and show how regular community efforts can help improve the condition of coastal areas. He also stressed the need to combine environmental awareness with practical action and responsible habits.

The Mumbai drive is part of SHM Shipcare’s wider corporate social responsibility activities, which include environmental protection and community engagement in coastal regions. By working with educational institutions, volunteers and local stakeholders, the company seeks to support conservation efforts and encourage greater public participation in protecting India’s coastline.

SHM Shipcare plans to use such initiatives to strengthen awareness about waste management and the importance of preserving marine ecosystems. The programme also highlights the role businesses and communities can play in addressing environmental challenges through local action.

SHM Shipcare Private Limited provides services in shipbuilding, ship repair, ship management, maritime safety and marine survival systems. Founded in 2001 by Saifuddin Hajee, an IIT Mumbai alumnus, the company was established with the aim of improving safety at sea through the timely supply of quality marine safety and survival equipment.

Mr Hajee received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Directorate General of Shipping for his contribution to the maritime industry. He also played a role in the construction of 29 specialised patrol boats serving the Indian Navy, coastal port authorities and Mumbai Police.

SHM Shipcare supports government agencies, ports and shipping industry operators in India and overseas.
