Shell Lubricants has completed the full acquisition of Raj Petro Specialities Pvt Ltd from Germany’s Brenntag Group. The deal, closed on July 1, strengthens Shell’s presence in India’s fast-growing lubricants and specialty fluids market.
With this acquisition, Shell aims to extend its reach into key sectors including power transmission, pharmaceuticals, and personal care—areas where Raj Petro already has a strong foothold. The move supports Shell’s strategy to grow its lubricants business in India, a market identified as critical to future expansion.
“This acquisition adds scale and a strong portfolio that complements our existing lubricants business,” said Jason Wong, Shell’s Executive Vice President for Global Lubricants. “It positions us to better serve industrial customers and accelerate growth in the region.” Raj Petro, which has been operating for over 80 years, produces and markets petroleum-based products used in industries such as construction, mining, automotive, agriculture, and energy. The company has a broad global footprint, with commercial ties in nearly 100 countries.
Shell remains the world’s top supplier of finished lubricants—a title it has held for 18 years running, based on data from Kline & Company’s 2023 market analysis. Shell products are available in more than 100 countries.
Brenntag, the former owner, is a global distributor of chemicals and ingredients, headquartered in Germany. The sale is in line with Brenntag’s strategy to streamline its portfolio, though financial terms of the deal were not made public. The acquisition underscores Shell’s ongoing focus on strengthening its operations in emerging markets and diversifying its offerings across industrial sectors.
