Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), a subsidiary of Shell plc, along with Sunlink Energies and Resources Limited, has reached a final investment decision on the HI offshore gas development in Nigeria. Once operational, the project will deliver around 350 million standard cubic feet of gas per day — roughly equal to 60 thousand barrels of oil equivalent — to Nigeria LNG (NLNG; Shell holds 25.6% equity). NLNG converts and ships liquefied natural gas to customers worldwide, and first production from the HI project is targeted before the end of the decade.
“Our latest decision builds on recent progress in the Bonga deep-water programme and reinforces our long-term commitment to Nigeria’s energy sector, particularly in Deepwater and Integrated Gas,” said Peter Costello, Shell’s Upstream President. “This development will strengthen our global Integrated Gas portfolio while supporting Nigeria’s ambitions to play a larger role in the international LNG market.”
Additional gas supply to NLNG—supported by the Train 7 expansion at Bonny Island—aligns with Shell’s plan to increase global LNG output by 4–5% annually through 2030. The project is expected to advance NLNG’s contribution to Nigeria’s wider economic objectives, including job creation during both construction and operations.
The HI field, discovered in 1985, sits in about 100 metres of water roughly 50 kilometres offshore. Recoverable resources are estimated at approximately 285 million barrels of oil equivalent. Shell plc is one of the world’s largest energy companies, operating across the entire value chain—from exploration and production to refining, chemicals, renewables, and integrated gas.
Headquartered in London, the company develops and delivers energy solutions to meet global demand while expanding its focus on lower-carbon technologies such as biofuels, hydrogen, electric mobility, and carbon capture. With operations in more than 70 countries, Shell works closely with governments, industry partners, and local communities to drive long-term energy security, technological innovation, and sustainable development. Its portfolio includes major deep-water, LNG, and renewable energy projects, positioning the company as a leading player in the evolving global energy landscape.
