Shanghai Electric has successfully completed a landmark biomethanol bunkering operation for international shipping, marking a significant step forward in the adoption of low-carbon fuels within the maritime industry. The operation involved the supply of biomethanol produced at the company’s Taonan facility to a next-generation dual-fuel container vessel at Shanghai’s Yangshan Port. Conducted over two days in early March and coordinated by Shanghai International Port Group, the process utilised a simultaneous loading and bunkering model, enabling efficient alignment of cargo operations and fuel supply.

This achievement represents the first large-scale use of Chinese-produced biomethanol by a major global shipping operator and demonstrates Shanghai Electric’s growing capabilities in green hydrogen and advanced fuel technologies. The successful fueling also validates the company’s fully integrated supply chain model, encompassing production, logistics and port-side delivery.

The Taonan project, located in Jilin Province, is China’s first large-scale commercial biomethanol facility. It leverages abundant local renewable resources, including wind, solar and biomass, to produce low-carbon fuel through a combination of proprietary technologies. These include biomass gasification, renewable-powered hydrogen production and methanol synthesis using carbon-rich syngas.

Biomethanol produced at the facility offers substantial lifecycle carbon emission reductions compared to conventional coal-based methanol, supporting global efforts to decarbonise maritime transport. The fuel meets international marine standards and has received ISCC EU certification, reinforcing its viability as a sustainable alternative for shipping. The Taonan facility currently operates continuously following optimisation and has an initial annual production capacity of 50,000 tonnes, with plans for expansion already under consideration.

Shanghai Electric’s integrated “green power–green hydrogen–green methanol” approach not only supports cleaner fuel production but also enhances the utilisation of renewable energy and biomass resources. The model provides a stable and scalable pathway for supplying low-carbon fuel to the global shipping sector.

Company representatives described the successful bunkering as a major breakthrough and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing biomethanol technology. Future efforts will focus on strengthening collaboration with international shipping companies and port operators, while continuing to develop end-to-end solutions that support the global transition to cleaner energy and carbon neutrality in maritime operations.
