Seco has introduced TP3502, a new CVD-coated Duratomic® turning grade developed to deliver stable and predictable tool life across a broad range of ISO P steel turning applications. The new grade incorporates advances in coating technology, edge preparation and insert manufacturing, providing manufacturers with a combination of wear resistance and toughness for demanding and variable machining conditions.
Designed as a general-purpose ISO P35 grade, TP3502 is intended for applications involving varying material hardness, complex component geometries, interrupted cuts and mixed cutting conditions. The grade is positioned to compete with established CVD-coated grades used in general steel turning, while enabling manufacturers to pursue higher cutting speeds without compromising process stability or component quality.
TP3502 is suitable for machining low- and high-alloy steels as well as selected stainless steels, ductile irons and powder-metal components. These applications can expose cutting tools to frequent interruptions and changing loads, making consistent performance and predictable tool life important for maintaining production efficiency.
The updated coating and edge preparation of TP3502 are designed to generate a more controlled wear pattern and extend tool life compared with earlier generations. By balancing toughness and wear resistance, the grade is intended to provide reliable performance across a wide range of everyday steel-turning operations.
“With TP3502, the focus is on improving process reliability in everyday steel turning,” said Mikael Lindholm, Global Product Manager General ISO Turning at Seco. “This stability allows manufacturers to increase cutting data and simplify production planning.”
The new grade also incorporates features supporting digital manufacturing and sustainability initiatives. Chrome-used edge detection is designed to help operators identify and make use of remaining cutting edges, potentially improving insert utilisation. A Data Matrix Code provides traceability and enables digital tracking of the inserts throughout their use.
TP3502 is manufactured using recycled powders and is included in Seco’s buy-back recycling programme. The approach is intended to support material recovery, reduce manufacturing waste and assist customers in their sustainability reporting.
The introduction of TP3502 expands Seco’s Duratomic® portfolio for steel machining and reflects the company’s focus on developing cutting tools that address the practical requirements of modern production environments. Its combination of coating technology, edge preparation, manufacturing improvements and digital identification is designed to support consistent machining results across varying steel-turning applications.
