Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI), India’s largest shipbuilding and heavy fabrication company, has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with leading European ship owner and operator Rederiet Stenersen AS for the construction of six IMO Type II chemical tankers, each with a capacity of 18,000 deadweight tons (DWT). This agreement marks a major milestone in India’s shipbuilding exports, representing a total project value of approximately USD 220 million, with an option for an additional six vessels of similar class.

The vessels will be built at SDHI’s state-of-the-art facility in Pipavav, Gujarat. The vessels will be designed by Marinform AS & StoGda, Norway, and classed by DNV. Each ship will be built to Ice Class 1A standards and feature an advanced hybrid propulsion system. The hybrid system supports operational modes with advanced automation for improved manoeuvrability, lower emissions, and operational flexibility. This advanced system enables multiple operational modes supported by automation technologies, enhancing maneuverability, reducing emissions, and improving fuel efficiency.

Each vessel has been designed with a strong emphasis on sustainability and adaptability. The tankers will be future-ready, with design provisions allowing for conversion to methanol or LNG fuel, as well as the ability to upgrade battery capacity up to 5,000 kWh. These features will ensure enhanced environmental performance and long-term flexibility for the adoption of new green technologies as the maritime industry transitions toward cleaner energy solutions.
