Bystronic has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the “Tools for Materials Processing” business unit from Coherent Inc, a strategic move that strengthens Bystronic’s presence in emerging markets such as medical devices, semiconductors, and general manufacturing. The acquisition also broadens Bystronic’s laser technology portfolio with new capabilities in micro material processing, marking, labeling, and drilling—further enhancing its position as a global leader in advanced manufacturing solutions.

As part of the transaction, Bystronic will gain ownership of the Rofin brand, a renowned name in the laser technology industry, and will integrate the business under a newly established division called “Bystronic Rofin.” This new unit will specialize in versatile laser applications designed to process a diverse range of materials, including metal, glass, ceramics, polymers, and organic substances. Beyond portfolio expansion, the acquisition is expected to generate operational synergies through shared procurement and research and development initiatives.

Domenico Iacovelli, CEO of Bystronic, commented “Through the acquisition of Coherent’s ‘Tools for Materials Processing’ business, we are extending our capabilities into adjacent, fast-growing markets. This is an excellent technological and cultural fit for Bystronic, and we look forward to welcoming the employees and customers of Bystronic Rofin.”

The acquired business, which employs approximately 400 people, generates annual revenues of around USD 100 million and is headquartered in Gilching, near Munich, Germany. The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the coming months. Both companies have agreed to keep the financial details confidential.
